Not sure about the rest of you reading this, but I follow many Catholic Facebook pages for various reasons, but here lately I have been seeing more non-Catholics in the comments bashing the Catholic Church. I feel so obligated to correct them and point them to scripture that I spend at least an hour every night doing this. My wife says to let it go but I just can’t stand seeing the anti-Catholic, non-educated comments out there. Anyone else do the same thing? Maybe it’s my OCD kicking in?

Be careful, please. There are many many Facebook users. You might find yourself outnumbered quickly. You could turn your chosen task into a full time job, or worse yet, an addiction.

I find it’s generally best to avoid comment sections online. There’s that verse about not casting pearls before swine, and I try to remember that whenever I do look and see something completely ridiculous.

I’ve had discussions with my Catholic friends about this.

I think we came to the conclusion that you can’t change hearts with a Facebook post.

If anything, people just wind up becoming more entrenched, whichever side they’re on.

I guess the same could be said about CAF too sometimes 😊

I avoid Facebook entirely. I hate it. I have a profile because I want to follow what my sons are doing, but I rarely post anything.

My advice to anyone being driven crazy by Facebook… stop using Facebook!

I used to do the same thing on youtube channels. I was always amazed at the number of atheists / anti-Catholics that post on Christian/Catholic videos.

I look at it like this. Why are they continually watching these videos? Are they looking for answers?

But generally I gave up trying to debate them simply because its like trying to kill all the ants in the world. Although you could spend your entire life and a million gallons of ant killer you will never succeed.

I am much happier and less stressed when I read the comments sections now.👍

I look at those who stalk Catholic websites as ones who are lost and searching for the truth, even though they come across as attacking the Church. There is an interest they have and I ignore their mean posts but, every once in awhile I see one that almost begs for a solid answer grounded in Church teachings and try to do my best to give an answer ONE TIME. I am not into debating. I come to Catholic Answers to learn more and give encouragement to other faithful Catholics. I try to focus on that only.

It’s just online trolling, of the sort that you get on every social platform. Trolls will enjoy doing it on Catholic or other religious group pages, as they will often get responses from folk who feel that they must respond to defend their deeply-held beliefs.

Quite honestly, the old adage ‘don’t feed the troll’ still holds true.

I had to stay away from Facebbok for awhile, because of this. I recently returned because unknowingly one of my Catholic FB freind’s had died of cancer, and another FB Freindly I know personally had a stroke and I wasn’t aware of it. I also have run into snide comments on my Catholic posts, pArticularly abortion, so now I just read them and don’t comment. The comment thing was actually getting to be an occasion of sin for me because I’d get angry, so I had to stop it for awhile. Now I’m trying to limit myself to FB only 30 minutes a day and limiting my commenting on posts.

Do you remember that cartoon where a wife is calling her husband to bed and he says he can’t because “Someone is wrong on the internet”?

For some reason, that helps me let go of the need to correct everyone on the internet who is wrong about Catholicism.

And if you pray for them instead, you will have used less time in a better way and helped those poor people more 🙂

OTOH, if you have trouble with OCD, you might want to mention it to your counselor!

You can still unfollow people on Facebook, without unfriending them, so you will no longer see their posts on your timeline. There is a follow/unfollow button in the person’s profile, but this also can be done by opening the menu on the top right corner of a post and choosing “I did not like this”.

I like following and reading all of the great Catholic information out there and also have Facebook so that grandma can see pictures of her grand kids. The challenge is not to read the comments and just read the articles.

For me, the challenge isn’t in seeing these posts on Catholic Facebook pages, but from people I consider friends. I’m a convert to the faith, so the large majority of my friends are not Catholic. I am also part of a profession that is remarkably hostile toward religion as a whole and Christianity in particular. Sometimes on a daily basis I have to see multiple posts bashing Catholicism or Christianity, expounding on how my beliefs are wrong, bigoted, etc. I’ve even had to endure the word “evil” thrown around pretty liberally.

Here’s the thing. Nothing I say is going to change their minds. The most I’ll do is upset myself. It is far more productive for me to close the page, say a prayer that they will open their minds and I will find patience and remember that people can be wrong on the internet.

The same thing happens with Christians on Atheist videos - sometimes they’re not even Atheist videos, they’re science videos. It’s a two-way street.

It’s your OCD. You are not going to change anyone’s opinion on Facebook, even if they do go back and read it. Stop reading the comments, you will sleep better. 😊

I’ve never had a FaceBook account, but I’m assuming it must of course be infested with trolls, the same as virtually everywhere else on the internet.🤷 Just as a word of caution, please don’t drive yourself crazy trying to straighten out hordes of people who aren’t going to listen to you anyway. Life’s too short, jatkins29.

I don’t have a FB page. I also can’t stand it. But as far as not trying to change hordes of people, isn’t that are job as Catholics, to spread the word of God, to try to be “Fishers of Men” and inform as many as we can? Whether we succeed or not is not our concern but His. I’m not saying we should stand toe to toe with someone who wishes to debate but say what needs saying and then move on. I have to bite my tongue a lot. I teach in a public High School and it is very anti-Catholic/Anti-Christianity. I have a large number of Somalians who question me all the time. It is tough to resist.
