Recently I have come across many trolls on the internet, mostly homosexuals or pro-choicers, that have been attacking the Catholic church for “denying homosexuals and women Christ.” This is absolutely insane because we all know that the Church is not anti-anyone, but pro-everyone.

What is more frustrating however is the fact that many Christians reply to these type of people. It is quite obvious that by replying, you are only giving them what they want. They want to upset you, because often times anger leads to sin. They want to make you question your beliefs. Like most anti-catholic people, they try and tell us what we teach or believe, when in reality what they are saying in untrue. They will stretch the truth and even flat out lie, but somehow they still feel as if they are right. In all honesty, I think some people actually want us to hate them.

We have given them out explanations on why what they are doing is wrong and they are very just explanations. If they don’t accept it, that is between them and God.

Wouldn’t it be better to just leave these people alone on the internet? Maybe say a prayer for them, instead of wasting your time replying?

They may well as many are be perfectly sincere and not attacking per se. Slamming the door on them is closing out the chance of change. Hurt people tend to attack and if you can get to know them… It is possible to listen and help without getting riled. Rather then explain and engage in heated debate

Trying again… I am not sure these folk are anti catholic per se. It is possible and helpful to listen and nod in the right places and let them vent. Without engaging them or involving which can polarise them anyway . What you describe is true but it is not for us to take them on. Anger indeed leads to sin.
I am sometimes able to defuse folk like this.

No I did not… Wrote a grand reply! let me think! Back to your post!t
oh ok I see what you did there! I agree. If you can keep your emotions in check than replying may do some good, but in all honesty I don’t think these people are open to listening to us anyway.

If you’re talking about social media like arguing on facebook, generally, you are wasting time if you think you’re going to ultimately change anyone.

Coming on here is better because people tend to be more genuine when asking questions about the Faith.

I don’t disagree that people often waste their time by “feeding the trolls.” We neglect to remember that Christian persecution happens online too. Many online Catholics feel compelled to evangelize, and to be honest, that isn’t such a bad thing. For every ten trolls there might be one or two people who honestly would benefit from dialog.

People who don’t even respond via post to these exchanges might benefit from online Catholic evangelization. You never know, even the trolls themselves might get a seed that years later might bear fruit.

It is a very frustrating thing to watch. Depending on my mood, I could easily take the bait, but you never know when some of those seeds will take root.

I agree. Talking of trolls seems to discouraged here, but I can’t for the life of me fathom why people would come to a Catholic site called Catholic Answers and not expect, well, Catholic. answers.
Even when priests give scholarly replies people want to tell them what to believe and it’s never illuminating. It leads astray the lurkers, which I suspect is the whole point.
If people want to play head games I suppose it’s an open forum, but some of the threads are pretty insulting.

Happy 4rh btw. 👋

Some people may automatically assume that we are going to put on show for them that involves telling them what they are doing is okay, that we can make a special exception for them, or they just demand we go along with it because greater society thinks its  and/or acceptable.

Right. And they are 100% disappointed when we don’t.
But it’s more than that. Some people really believe they are going to “school” the believers.
Kind of funny if it wasn’t so insulting. Those who find it impossible to believe also find it impossible to accept that others DO believe.

If a person is not interested in getting thier facts straight, then there’s not point in repeatedly telling them the true facts. Don’t waste your time.

I always prefer to give folk the means to ask and learn. Maybe it will get home to them later. Prefer not to pass judgement

AMEN to this. SO many times we judge others far too much. You learn to speak without getting emotionally tangled and to have patience as God shows us.

To others what you say is what WE are doing… and maybe they expect Christian kindness? Which we need to show always. Insulting? Nah! An honour that they ask

I try to avoid atheists.

I believe we should show them charity and not presume bad-faith motives on their part - however hard we may find it to understand what they say.

They are our brothers and sisters (or transgender siblings) in Christ and we should welcome them.

This and the previous posts are exactly what I am talking about. I guess no one heard Sunday’s Gospel. 😊

Go ahead, feed the trolls. Not me, no way.
These poor souls need real instruction, not a platform.
I’m out.

That loud crash you just heard was my jaw hitting the floor
