Anti-Catholic Mother

My mom is so anti-Catholic that she literally blames any behavior that she sees as strange or abnormal on the fact that a person is Catholic. For example, if someone is a bad driver and has a Catholic school sticker on their car, then they are rude because they are Catholic. Her friend is having a baby with Down’s because she’s a “good” Catholic. Her other friend visits pyschics because “she’s Catholic and Catholics are superstitious” My dad was apparently not a great lover because he was “raised Catholic” Her neighbors called her a dirty little girl when she was little because “they were Catholic”

It goes on and on and on. I defend Catholics and Catholicism all the time and am told that I am only drawn to it because of the negative old world Italian influence of my fathers family (who I rarely saw).

Does anyone else know people like this or am I especially blessed? :bigyikes:

I think the best thing you can do is pray for your mom and try to ignore her remarks as best as possible. There’s nothing you can say to soften the heart of someone like that. Only God can do it.

I’m sorry you have to deal with that. It must be very painful and frustrating.

Actually this sounds like an unintentional compliment to Catholics, i.e. if her friend wasn’t a Catholic she would have aborted the baby.

My 2 cents:

Be charitable.
If you speak, speak a little. No more than she can understand at any one time.
Set your goals long term.
Pray alot.

There is great hope. When my wife started looking in to the Church and decided she would become Catholic, her mother, a Fundy type, said she was taking hereself and our kids to hell. Three years later she was going through RCIA and becoming Catholic as well.

I have people in my Family that say the same types of things. The best thing to do is to pray for them to find the truth of the Catholic Church. The Holy Spirit will lead them home just be persistant and pray for them every day by name.
