last night while watching a local news station, the news anchor was giving an update about a dispute between the local cable company and the nfl. (the nfl wants to make their network available as a basic digital package and the cable company wants to air the games for a fee.) a representative of the cable company called the nfl’s actions to involve the government to help settle the dispute a ‘hail mary’ effort. i dont think i will ever get used to stabbing remarks of this nature…but i am very upset about the comment. am i being too thin skinned?

I think he was trying to be cute referencing the football term the “Hail Mary pass”. Here’s what Wikipedia says about it.
The term “Hail Mary pass” is believed to have been coined by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, referring to his desperation (and Catholic beliefs), for his game-winning touchdown pass in a December 28, 1975 NFC semifinal playoff game.

I doubt that he meant it as an anti-Catholic remark so maybe a little too thin skinned.

I rather agree that the remark is most likely not in any way meant as a poke at Catholicism. The gentleman would probably apologize if he realized it was perceived by any as such.

In a football context, the term “Hail Mary” is not anti-Catholic. The term originated with Roger Staubach, a Catholic football player who told reporters that he had prayed the Hail Mary while attempting a very difficult pass. It now refers to any very difficult or desperate play, where the players are probably praying for success just as hard, or harder, than they are physically playing.

What made you think it was a stabbing remark? Just unfamiliar with the term “hail mary pass”?
There are plenty of anti-catholic comments but this most likely was not one of them.

You are being a tad thin skinned…the “hail mary” is a desperation throw with no true planning, just a desperate hope that someone will catch the ball and win the game.

It’s generally not meant to be offensive, but I do feel that it is at least a little bit of a callous reference to Our Lady. You could pray for him?

i might not have been very clear in my original message…it was not the nfl that made the coment… it was the lady from the cable company… and yes i wll pray for her… i also urge all of us to pray for all others who do not understand the respect we have for the virgin mother of our lord Jesus Christ.

I appreciate your sensitivity; unfortunately this expression usually means a desparate play. It’s not right to use it this way, but I don’t think it’s deliberately anti-Catholic.

I always have taken these type comments exactly the oppose direction, for example of the anchor were their in person I might say Gee, I did not know you were Catholic. I am glad people reinforce Catholic beliefs even if they do it unknowingly. I would really be sad if we start using Moslum expression in our daily speech.

thank you for saying so. that is how i felt when i heard the comment. i call it respect, and although i have encountered a great deal of hostility and intolerance toward my catholic beliefs, i am not well versed in apologetics (nor in football lingo, it would appear).

I understood that, but you also said she did so in the context of reporting about a dispute with the NFL. To use a recognized football term in reporting on a football story would not be unusual or disrespectful.

A deeper meaning for the “hail mary” is the expectation for a miracle. As in it’ll take a miracle to pull this off. A bit cheesey, but not done with any evil intentions.
