What should I do if my wife is visiting anti-Catholic websites to help her in her decision to leave the Catholic Church?

Thanks.

Nothing but rebate the arguments found. I think that that is the best way not to leave the Church.

Greetings PabloSD.

Be in prayer. Have frequent recourse to the Sacraments.

I would open the discussion and ask if she read anything that struck her fancy. Work where she’s working from. Start reading everything you can get your hands on the faith so that you can be ready to give her any answers that she might have. Also posting her questions on CAF might be very helpful too. Just make sure what is being told you from CAF is 100% in line with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

ONe of the helpful things I have found with Catholic that are thinking about leaving is asking them what attracts them to other Churches. Find out what that is and work with similiarites, then approach the differences.

When my mother was well, she is Church of Christ. I would work with her and we both found the smiliarites between the Catholic Church and the Church of Christ. They both believe in Jesus. They both have a songs, prayers, sciprture readings, homily/sermons, a form of Communion [though there’s is not like ours.], ect. Then once we found out those similiarites, she’d ask so you Catholics believe in the Real Presence in Communion, why is ours different. Because we had spent a long time in hammering out a common bridge, we were able to tackle the heavy stuff. She is open to Mary and the Eucharist now.

Strengthen and fortify your prayer and spritual life. Make time. Try to say a family rosary together. Go to Mass together.

Ask her to name the BEST reason she has found to leave the Church, from these various websites. There will be some competition here (some focus on non-Biblical doctrine, some on pagan influence, some on shameful episodes of Catholic history, etc), but which is the MOST persuasive to her in particular.

Presumably, if you can demonstrate that her BEST reason has no merit, the second-rate reasons are automatically called into question.

We can help you with the BEST reason, and all of the second-rate reasons as well. We’ve heard it all. But we need to know what pushes her buttons. Only you can tell us that.

Greetings DavidFilmer,

That’s a good idea. I shall use that technique next time I can. I had never thought of that before. Thanks for posting that.

Inform her that a true researcher always faces the anti of whatever he or she is researching with intellectual honesty and accept the possibility that he or she may be wrong with any conclusion. No good search should be fueled by pride or fear; the right answer will always stand in the open and able to withstand scrutiny. Other words make sure she understands she should devote an equal amount of time to pro-catholic apologetic sources as she does with anti-catholic sources. If she finds enough reason to leave, then her reasons should be tested least she’s afraid of being wrong, if this is the case then all she is doing is looking for premises to fit her conclusion without the desire to challenge it.

I can’t exactly claim credit for the idea. I believe that Pat Benatar had a hit single, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” way back in 1979 or 1980. And I’m pretty sure the idea goes back a LONG time before that song.

I was once discussing Sola Fide with a protestant. I asked him if the concept was Biblical - and, naturally, he answered, “of course.” I asked him to give me a verse. He stammered, and said “well, there are LOTS of verses.” So I asked him to give me the best and most convincing verse. I made it clear that I didn’t want him to give me three or five or fifty verses - but ONLY one. And THAT would be the verse that we would talk about. I offered to give him a few days to think about it.

Unfortunately, he would not talk to me after that. I presume he was unable to come up with a defensible verse and quit the field. Hopefully, he eventually wondered WHY he could not come up with a defensible verse, and maybe that led to his Catholic conversion. But I do not know. I thus lost a friend.

I’m just warning you - I lost a friend, but I would not want you to loose a wife. You must be careful here.

Greetings DavidFilmer,

Yes this would have to be used very sparingly and in a few circumstances. Like the example I have my Mom, this would not have worked.

I guess he couldn’t come up with a verse, because there is NO ONE verse that can defend Sola Fide.

Did you think that I was married? I am single. 😃

I suggest prayer and penance to prevent your wife’s leaving. I’ll be praying for you.

Like others said, people who are only looking at one side of a debate aren’t being unbiased.

Tell her to read those things then go to catholic.com for all the responses, research and not be easily tricked into believing stuff. She will start find that most of it is just lies and trash talk.

Let her do so, its her choice and her path.

But I’d just like to add that most AntiCatholic sites are absurdly biased and have no factual evidence to back them up.

btw, if that whole pedophile priest reason (which I hear quite often from AntiCatholics) ever comes up in her decision to leave, here’s a nugget of information that goes a long way in defending yourselves against that.
csmonitor.com/2002/0405/p01s01-ussc.html

Or just think of the number of articles where public schools with sex abuse cases are covered and the number of articles where decade old sex abuse cases in the Church are covered. An astonishing difference.

What constitutes anti-catholic? Are they simply websites making reasonable arguments against Catholicism? Are they advocating a different religion? Are they making unjustified attacks on Catholicism?

Listen to her arguments, then refute them.

You could always pose some of her questions here, or better yet have her join the forum.
Then she could pose the arguments herself, and see that the claims these anti-catholic websites are full of more holes, than swiss cheese. She will find that she must submit to truth, or reject it, and kick against the goads!

Every evangelical no-denominational I speak with out here in L.A, loves to argue with Catholics, until they are confronted with an informed Catholic. Then they high tail it out of there, or convert. Many of my non-denominational friends (I used to be a non-denominational evangelical) have converted, or avoid talking about Christ while I’m around.

Truth is on your side.

Peace and Love in Christ :highprayer:
