She did make that comment regarding the Pope, though. I would HOPE that Catholics as a group give him a little more respect than they would leaders of different faiths and ‘ordinary’ men.

I’d say it was a comparison, by a person who is neither Catholic or Mormon. It is unique to Mormon culture, that particular tone and cadence taken on by people who speak at a Mormon pulpit. It doesn’t occur in Catholicism, by the Pope, or anyone else. I don’t think there is a point beyond that, other than, why? Which, I don’t think there is an answer for, other than, “cultural habit”.

I’m not sure about that. I never heard it used derogatorily. It was not so much sounding authentic as just a way of talking that was very noticeable.

For example: When President Hinkley talked or President Monson talk they have that same cadence of speech and tone of voice when they are talking at conference. Neither of them talk that was in person. I had the pleasure of meeting both of these men (as well as President Faust) and both were very pleasant fellows who were good speakers in person but had that LDSpeak on TV.

The LDSpeak of which I am speaking is not to be confused with Mormonics which includes words such as ‘squeet’ (Let’s Go Eat)

You do have a point.

However, I have seen that same sort of cadence/tone used by other preachers…perhaps it’s a “get ready, I’m going to be serious here religiously” sort of thing?

OK, yeah, I finally get what you are talking about…it is a cultural cadence.

And I heard the Mormonspeak as more…

“jeet yet?”

“nope, jew?”

“Nope, lesqueet.”

Though I think it’s more like an intermountain west thing than it is “Mormon.”

Yeah, you could be right about it being an intermountain thing. Of course if you live in Utah (particularly in the SL Valley) you could all squeet in some really good places such as Christopher’s Sea Food and Steak, Crown Burger or Training Table. If luck runs bad then you are heading to Chuck-a-Rama.

What you are talking about is simple respect, though…and are you telling me that when the Pope speaks, you don’t pay attention? Does he not speak, upon occasion, “infallibly?”

Don’t you kiss his ring…or that of the Cardinals to show respect for the office which they hold? Doesn’t a statement by the Pope mean more to you than a statement by your next door neighbor?

By the way, most Natives of N. America who know about the BOM are perfectly aware that some of the plot was loosely based on the Viking invasion. That is the reason why so few are Mormon-- they know that it is proto-Nazi in nature.

The Mormons of Nazi Germany were very cozy with the leadership. And American Mormon leaders who visited worked hard to make sure it would stay that way.

Hitler was a fan of Karl May, German novelist who wrote Native-themed novels, even though he had never been to the Americas, and did not know any. The only one available in English is the most charitable towards Natives. The rest are worse rubbish than the BOM.

By the way, I have never been Mormon. I have lived among them, and made the mistake of tolerating whatever they did to me. Just glad that they would not overtly practice genocide.

Perhaps you would benefit from reading the novels of Mary Doria Russell. I just discovered her, and they were very mind-opening.

Jerusha, it is statements like that which make your credibility suspect. First, Joseph Smith wasn’t educated, or aware of, any sort of Viking invasion of the Americas. Second, “proto-Nazi?” Where in the world did that leap come from?

I suppose next you are going to equate JS with Hitler?

Would you care to point to any publication of mine that attacks Catholicism in any way? Where is my equivalent to 'The Godmakers?"

Can you point to a single post of mine that is critical of, or inaccurate, regarding Catholic beliefs?

How are Ed Decker and I similar, dear?
