So, here I am again, post-confession!
It was a wonderful experience. I will tell you all honestly that when I walked out of that confessional I felt like I could fly! I ended up confessing face-to-face with Father and I am glad I did. If he is so merciful, understanding and kind, how much more Jesus!
There were a handful of people ahead of me so I had time to pray for awhile. The “O My Jesus” prayer came to mind and I prayed it in the quiet there. It was so peaceful. Then I heard a strange sound from the confessional. Father and the unknown penitent were LAUGHING. I thought, “How in the world did they come up with something to laugh about?” I was still feeling a little “haunted” by the specter of 34 years’ worth of sins and I was very sober minded. The next person went in and was in and out quickly. The next went in, and again, after a few minutes, there was this person and Fr. finding something to laugh about. I thought to myself, “This must not be as scary as I am anticipating.” Then it was my turn and I just blabbed on and on.
I found myself laughing at one point.
As I said my sins it was like they were little bubbles bursting—they were just gone. I thought to myself that there was no way I could explain this feeling to a rabid Protestant such as I used to be because it sounded so phony. “I just walked in and Father waved his magic wand and poof! My sins were gone.” But that’s just how it felt. It was an incredible experience. After the absolution Fr. said, “Don’t you love this feeling? Get used to it!” Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions and advice. God bless.
