Any Catholics ever get into debates w/Apostolics?

I have a friend, or should I say a friends Mom & she’s a religious nut for the Apostolic faith. She claims her religion existed since Adam & Eve, but also that she wouldn’t be part of a religion that came in AD & some people say her relgion didn’t even exist until the 1900’s. She also claims the Catholic church started BC, but I think she has Romans & Roman Catholics mixed up. She thinks when priests do exorcisms that they don’t work, because she claims the cross was condemned by God & so was the Catholic church. She also can’t see to get past the fact that I was baptized as a baby & no matter what I say, she thinks I was baptized wrong. She even claims she read most of this in the bible, but I think she has history mixed up & that her church put a lot of this in her head.

Ask her what verse. I’d love to hear where the bible condemns the cross.

I’m pretty sure they just baptise in the name of Jesus, so tell her you think she was baptised wrong, then you can both agree to disagree. 😉

Funny, reading the bible was one of the major things that caused me to move away from such unorthodox belief systems.
 
Well I think she believes the cross was condemned because God died on it & then she likes to bring up that people wouldn’t wear an electric chair if their brother died in 1, but that isn’t the same thing. Well I know some of these things are what her church teaches, like getting baptized in Jesus’ name only like you’ve guessed right & she might’ve been baptized as a child too due to her parents being Catholics (her parents weren’t devout Catholics though). She really like to think she learned so much just reading from the bible, but it’s obvious to me her facts aren’t straight. She assumes bad about pretty much anybody that doesn’t go to the same church as her & thinks she knows much more then me, but I will admit there’s a lot I need to learn. The thing is she thinks she knows everything & I told her I’ve learned some things on the net, which I don’t think she realizes all the things you can find here (true & false).

-Ulflias, not wolflein, was an arian, who believed that there are many gods, and the Father is the head who created all the other ones, like Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
-Priscantillists: lies are ok, matter is evil, and they believed in enlightenment. the list goes on and on…)

Wiki isn’t always a good source, but I’ve seen others say it was started in the 1900’s. Anybody else read that pdf file? You can tell they don’t know what they’re talking about. I’m at the part where they say cathecism comes from a cult. Don’t they know that it’s basically Catholic schooling?
 
Wow, they believe in the Trail of Blood thing that some baptists buy into.

If they can actually convince themselves that they draw heritage through all those groups, there is not point talking to them. They are already too far gone from reality.

I am going to assume that your friend’s mother is a pentecostal.

Pentecostalists believe that the Bible is the inspired and infallible (unaltered) Word of God, written by holy men of old, as they were moved on by the Holy Spirit. In that sense, apostolics believe that the ‘true’ religion existed prior to Christ.

You are probably correct on that. I was surprised at how many actually believe that Roman Catholics are actually descendants of ancient pagan Romans! And these people graduated high school, too. What did they learn??

Then how does she explain Paul’s utterance: “but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles (Greeks).” (1 Corinthians 1:23 KJV)

Even Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” (Luke 19:14)

It sounds like she has ALOT mixed up in her head. I would suspect that thesect she belongs to is not a part of a larger denomination but started by some independent preacher who himself or herself is all mixed up in the head.

I also wanted to add that I read the “church history” & it doesn’t even sound like a church history, but more like a Catholic bashing. I told her I don’t like how they bash on people, but then she said God didn’t say there was anything wrong with speaking the “truth”. I’ve seen what some of their preachers say in church & it should be obvious they don’t speak the truth. I mean for instance I saw 1 acting like their religion doesn’t have back-sliders, blah blah & bashing on other religions. GEEZ… What kind of religion needs to bash on others to make themselves seem good? O & I forgot to add how she said in the bible it says wearing jewelry is a sin.

I know right, I like how they specifically say that their history chart isn’t Catholic bashing… they know what they’re doing.

How about you ask her to read the bible together? Maybe you can do a bible study… or there’s this sheet of paper that has, really little, bible quotes used to support Catholic teaching: catholicdestination.com/product_info.php?products_id=14196 I’ve got mine here by my computer right now in case I happen to see crazy things on the Non-Catholic religions thread 😃 This should help you immensely when you’re talking to her… just make sure to have a bible with you and this list, so you can give her instant answers.

It sounds almost cultish, the way she blindly follows them and seems to not even be reading the bible for herself :(. Wake her up! She needs help.
 
The way she acts it’s like she knows everything in the bible & I do need to know how to be prepared for these people. She wants me to research & well I’ve found a lot of people who think her religion is a cult (all you have to do is google/search apostolic cult). Thanks everyone for the help! I really felt like I needed it last time we talked!

My girlfriend had a radio program for 30 minutes. They would pray the rosary and share. Then that is it.

I don’t know where the Disciples of Christ fit in with Apostolics…may be they are close to them, but these two ‘ministers’ would be on the air at different times during the day. She would take a break to eat her lunch. Then they would come in to start an argument or denounce the Catholic church.

She finally got sick of them and told them leave so she could finish her meal.
 
Oh wow… I just looked it up and it turns out this is a cult 😦

My mom’s young cousin (30 now) got sucked into a cult in college. She would, at family reunions and dinners, ask for money from everybody from our good Catholic family. Of course people would ask, where is the money going? And she danced in circles around the answer. They talked to their priest, and they all read into it and decided to take her somewhere beautiful, and they chose a very pretty park with trees and hills all over the place. Essentially they kidnapped her… and they began to bombard her with all these pictures and memories from her youth, and this sort of helped to snap her out of it.

Are you close enough to her to help her in this way? Besides that you must pray and confuse her with facts about her cult. I would turn on her and ask: Please can you trace your church back to Jesus’ time for me? etc. Perhaps acting like you’re interested in the church, with many many questions, will open her heart to listen to you.
 
I’ll see what I can do, but I don’t plan on seeing her soon. It’s sad because she thinks me getting called to the lord means I’m going to be the same as her, but I wasn’t there for what she thinks I was & I’m sure she thought this was some kind of message from God or something for us to sit down & talk about religion. Well I’ll have to some how get it out of her head that they’re not the 1’s that know everything & aren’t the true church of God as they believe. I might try to reach her through her son 1st, but I need to get a hold of him & that’s 1 of the reasons I visited her. Even tho he seemed to fully believe in the religion, he doesn’t believe everything she says any more & I need to tell how much worse the situation really is.

…Nevermind, I found the answers I was looking for & obviously just more misunderstandings her church has. If I have anything else to add to the topic, I’ll update.
