You have to keep stirring and have a good candy thermometer. I have a real hard time making candy on my electric coil range. Someday, I dream of owning a gas stove or even one of those fancy stove tops like the kind they have in the middle of the table at the Melting Pot, where you just set the pot on the circle and it only heats the pot! My favorite candyish holiday treats are cornflake cookies. They are SUPER easy. You melt chocolate chips in the microwave along with two squares of semisweet chocolate. Then you pour in raisins and pecans and a whole much of cornflakes. Then you stir until it’s all covered in chocolate and dump it into little mounds on wax paper. My family LOVES them.
Oooooh, that sounds a lot like what a friend of mine calls “skillet cookies”–chocolate, oatmeal, sugar, milk, butter, vanilla all melted together and then poured onto waxed paper. Mmmmmm.

My favorite presents from childhood were two books by Elizabeth Goudge my mother got me when I had the flu when I was 10 (plus I got to eat chocolate ice cream 🙂 when I felt a little better). They were The Little White Horse, which was one of J.K. Rowling’s favorite books growing up, and Linnets and Valerians.

She wrote a Christmas book, I saw three ships. It’s a chapter book and may be worth getting a copy and reading with the family, especially if they aren’t familiar with it.

Other options are to read more well-known works such as “A Visit From St. Nicholas.” I also like the food recommendations from other posters.

I love “Christmas in Noisy Village,” but I love all the Noisy Village books.

Ice cream sundae gift basket with several topping options. Or gingerbread house kits? I have some nieces and a nephew that live out of town and who I don’t generally see for Christmas and I just send the whole family a card with a Chuck E Cheese giftcard.
👍👍

Or any gift basket.

We gave a family a movie basket. It included, at the time, a git card to a video store, microwave popcorn, a couple of boxes of candy and a couple for a six pack of soda.

You could do the same for a lot of different ideas.

Pasta night basket, cookie making basket. . . . Heck check out Pintrest for more ideas.
