Hi

Does anyone know if the two following Bibles are exactly the same translation ?

[1]. Holy Bible Catholic Edition : The New Revised Standard Edition - Publisher: Thomas Nelson - ISBN: 071800695X

[2]. The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: Revised Standard Version/Catholic Edition - Publisher: Ignatius Press - ISBN: 089870491X

I am familiar with the Ignatius Bible, but was curious to see [1] at a bookstore.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to the forums.

There is a BIG difference. [1] is the New Revised Standard Version, supposedly an update of the original RSV. However, it uses sweeping inclusive language, which seriously affects the theology.

[2] is the classic RSV Catholic Edition. It does not use inclusive language and is lauded by orthodox Catholic scholars as the most accurate modern translation available. However, the Ignatius Bible does ot have section headings, no study notes, and uses archaic “thee’s, thou’s, and thy’s” when referring to God, but regular pronouns everywhere else.

Between the two, I’d get the Ignatius as my primary study Bible, and if ever you get the NRSV, only as a cross-reference.

If you are often engaged in discussions with Protestants and want a scripture reference, use the NRSV. For private devotion, use the RSV from Ignatius Press. For one thing it does not have the study notes, which I find annoying, so it is lighter weight. For study, the RSV format I prefer is the one volume studies by Scott Hahn on the Gospels and Acts, now several other NT books are available. If you are using it for CCD and youth ministry in the Catholic church or RCIA, use the NAB because it corresponds to the lectionary readings, and is easy to read, direct English.

Thanks for your replies. The two Bibles that I presented above are both NRSV-Catholic Edition. My question is whether there is any difference between these two NRSV-CE Bibles, not between NRSV and NRSV-CE.

Thank you for your help.

Slightly off topic:

Does anybody know of a decent edition of the RSV-CE? Something WITH notes/cross references/chapter introductions?

Are you palying with our minds, here? Your original post was:

[1]. Holy Bible Catholic Edition : **The New Revised Standard ** Edition - Publisher: Thomas Nelson - ISBN: 071800695X

[2]. The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: **Revised Standard Version/Catholic Edition ** - Publisher: Ignatius Press - ISBN: 089870491X.

These are two different translations and not the same at all, as was answered above.

There is no NRSV-CE. There is an RSV-CE, but that is different than an NRSV.

Not at all. Please read again the parts that I highlight in red below.

the Ignatius Press RSV is NOT the NRSV, perhaps you are looking at another publisher?
