I have a friend who lives in Chicago who is having a hard time finding “real” Catholics to be friends with. She has 4 young children and she and her husband are wonderful faithful Catholics. In fact, she is the first Catholic I ever knew very well, and she and her husband helped me start my own journey to the Church. Anyway, according to her, most Catholics in her area-- not in the suburbs-- she lives in the city, are cultural Catholics, and she is having a hard time finding people with whom she can be friends because they are just on different pages, especially regarding NFP and family size.

Is there anyone out there? Or any recommendations as far as groups, etc.?

I hate to sound as if I am an old curmudgeon, but she should start with her parish. She is not bound to any parish boundaries in the City, so she should start searching. She needs to get her criteria for a good parish on paper, point by point. One of her criteria should be authentic, orthodox homilies, and lots of kids. If she is really traditional (wears some sort of head covering to Mass, prefers EF over OF), then she needs to go to St. John Cantius or Institute of Christ the King, even if she has to take the CTA. If not, then she needs to look for solid homilies, lots of kids, andperhaps a branch of the pro-life league.

Perhaps she is being called to “evangelize” among her acquaintances by example.
