Hi all,

For those who live in the San Diego area, does anyone know of any good, conservative, & reverrent parishes? I know of St. Anne’s Latin Mass, but my husband doesn’t want to travel that far. I have been dissappointed with the parishes in the La Mesa/El Cajon area.
(We live over there.) We’re trying to reach a compromise, he wants to go to the NO, and I want the Latin Mass, so I’m trying to find a nice conservative NO parish.

I don’t want:

Loud annoying rock music or wannabe gospel choirs who are just plain awful.

All the altar servers & lectors are little/teenage girls.

20 Eucharistic Ministers who do all the work while the priest just sits there during Communion.

A priest who starts off his homily with a bad joke, or who has liberal views!

Thanks in advance & God bless all.

As a visitor to SD the least objectionable I have found is Our Lady of the Rosary, an Italian parish, downtown as if you were going to the airport. Beautiful church building and tasteful NO liturgy , even on Saturday evening.

There are also some EF sites in SD which I have not visited. There is no OF in Latin with chant as far as I can tell.

If you are up for a drive, check out the Norbertine monastery in southern Orange County: abbeynews.com/ Beautiful liturgy, beautiful chant.

I am a parishioner of Our Mother of Confidence in University City. We are pretty traditional, however, due to the large attendence on Sundays, there are more EM’s than you might approve. You could try the Immaculta or the Latin Mass at Holy Cross Cemetary. I live in La Mesa, too.

I agree with the previous poster that Our Lady of the Rosary is quite good. They used to have Latin Ordinary Form but I don’t know if they still do. You might also take in the Mass at St Josephs Cathedral downtown. It is or was very good and reverent. I’m not sure if it still is. St John the Evangelist on the fringes of Hillcrest is also very good. Unfortunately all of these are further away from you than is the traditional Mass at Saint Anns on Sicard Street.

Steer clear from the Southbay, Eastlake or the North County areas:eek: They have a few places where you will find a reverent Mass, usually the early morning Masses but they are few and far between. As far as I know there is nothing in the east county that is very reverent However,if you are willing to try something just a bit different you might try the Maronite Mass in El Cajon. Their Church is located on Medford if I am not mistaken… The Maronites are in full communion with Rome and always have been. Their Masses are quite nice indeed and reception is done by intinction. If you have never been there you should give it a visit.

Other than that, I would guess that you are pretty much out of luck.

St. Margaret in Oceanside also has a TLM (EF) Missa Cantata, and even the OF is done with reverence and solemnity (e.g., Eucharistic prayer ad orientum, Gregorian chant, orthodox homilies, etc.). Unfortuantely, it’s just as far if not even farther than St. Anne from you. I recommend moving or deciding to make the weekly trip. It is worth it. Alternatively, see if there are other members of your parish interested in the EF and requesting it.

Valete in Domino.

Why don’t you like any of the Parishes’ out here in El Cajon??? There’s Holy Trinity, Saint Kiern’s and Our Lady of Grace…

And how can we know if a parish/priest is liberal or not???

Thanks…

Despite being a modernist looking building Our Lady of Grace has what I consider the best Priest in the diocese with Father Gallagher. He alone is the reason this church has a crucifix at all. Other than that unfortunately I can not say very good things about Father Ralph and I have not had enough of Father Ohmer to make up my mind either way.

The Choir is better than average but not spectacular though they really could be if they were allowed to. The director is quite good.

Two liberal nuns that I know of, one a very nice and the other one thinks she is the Msgr. One of the sisters the very nice is the one that taught my Confirmation classes the two things that I remember the most are:
  1. She said there was no reason as to why a woman could not be a Priest.
  2. The reason why Catholics do confirmation is because that’s what we have always done so we do it. We don’t know why but we do it anyway.
Unfortunately due to the church committees much of what he would like to do with the parish is never going to happen.

To respond to a previous poster as to why not go to a Holy Trinity in El Cajon two words Mariachi music as liturgical setting for the Mass. Oh and that goes also for St. John the Evangelist in Spring Valley or as I like to call it “the hanger.” If you have ever seen it you will know why I call it that.

St. Anne’s Parish in La mesa! It is an FSSP Parish, Only 1962 ritual there. 🙂

Father Gallagher is excellent. I have a key to the adoration chapel to make up for the other craziness.

Sweet. Father Gallagher told me about it once, he also mentioned that he tried very hard to bring some of those things to the front as to adorn the sanctuary but was not able to get passed the committees.

God if we only had a strong Bishop in this diocese.

Committees? Who runs the parish? I think the tail is wagging the dog.

Except for the tabernacle not being on the altar, :(, it doesn’t look too bad. I would like see a few more statues, however, but the main crucifix is AWESOME. 👍

What about Holy Trinity or Saint Kieran’s in El Cajon???

Have any of you ever been to them?

What did/do you think of them?

Thanks…

My niece made her First Communion at Holy Trinity; my brother and sister-in-law seem happy there. Father Hayes, who just left as pastor, was the associate at Our Mother of Confidence and he is a D-O-L-L. He was reassigned a few months ago, but I’m not sure where he went. He is deaf and would sometimes sign parts of the Mass, if he knew a deaf person was attending. I have never been to St. Kieran’s… If you REALLY want tradition, check out St. Ephrem’s, next to Our Lady of Grace; they are the Marionite Rite and Mass is from a very ancient tradition. You can see the enormous statue of Mary from the 125 North.

Father Brian is still here at Holy Trinity…

and what parish do you go to?

It’s a long story, but until recently, I was at St. Martin of Tours in La Mesa for about 40 years, now I go all the way out to University City for Our Mother of Confidence.
