Pardon me if I mentioned this already – Many of these older classical works can be found through the Gutenberg Project as free e-books!🙂

Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and LOTR are all must reads for fantasy and such, but if you’re looking for something historical then definitely read Below the Salt by Costain. It’s set in England just before the signing of the Magna Carta, and it’s a really awesome book if you persevere to the end. Also, there is a series by Regina Domain that is a modern, Catholic retake on fairy tales. She has five books out now, and I personally like the 1st and 3rd the best. Just type “Shadow of the Bear” into the google search engine and her website should pop up. I think there are the 1st chapters of each of her books as a sample of the stories. Artemis Fowl, Pendragon, and the Inheritance Series are some others that are pretty good.

I second the guy who said Weis and Hickman Dragonlance books were great, or at least the first trilogy was. Definitely worth checking out.

But if it’s fantasy you’re looking for, than the Wheel of Time is what you want. It will (eventually) span fourteen books (currently at twelve), and with each book around eight hundred pages it isn’t a quick read, but out of the many fantasy series I’ve perused I can honestly say it’s my favorite.

Granted, it’s quality declines significantly for four five or so books, but the previous two have had a huge upswing in quality and there isn’t any reason to suspect that the last two books will be any different in that regard. If nothing else read the first two books. The Great Hunt’s ending still gives me chills, even after seven years and the dozen or so times I’ve read it.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned the best fantasy series ever…The Belgariad, by David Eddings.

Some people read LOTR every year; this is the one I read constantly. The Malloreon is the sequel series, and though it’s not quite as good as the Belgariad, it’s still excellent stuff. After that Eddings slowly became dull and repetitive, unfortunately. But nothing has yet to top the Belgariad.

Of course, you could always read some of the writings that inspired Eddings; medieval romance (not mushy, lovey-dovey romance) such as King Arthur, Charlemagne, Sigurd, Njal’s Saga, etc.

Actually, I recommend this reading list from Amazon.com as a great starting point.

Warning: heavy reading ahead, but more than worth it for the fantasy fan.
The Belgariad and Malloreon are pretty good. A little on the cliche side with little character development, but the stories are pretty fun. I liked Eddings’ series The Elenium and The Tamuli trilogies better.
