Any Mike + The Mechanics fans out here?

I remember listening to them as a teenager and enjoying their songs a great deal.

I’ve rediscovered them lately. 🙂

Some of their songs truly stick in your mind in terms of their lyrical message:

“Beggar on a Beach of Gold” - about how there is a purpose to difficulties in life, and the need to count one’s blessings

“Word of Mouth” - don’t believe second-hand information, especially what the media tries to feed you

“The Living Years” - don’t wait too long to forgive; it may be too late

“Silent Running” - a “tribulation”-type scenario involving a corrupt state and an apostate church (would fit right in with an “End Times” work of fiction)

Plus, Mike Rutherford seems like a nice guy. 😃

Anyone else who enjoys these guys and their music? 😉
 
:yup: Oh yes, I very much like their music! (Although it’s been while since I’ve listened to them.)

Lamentably, they seem to have become a past-tense group. In my salad days of the late 1900s, however, I used to love that music.

“All I Need is a Miracle” – self explanatory. Guys would sing it on their way to the SATs. 🙂

“A Call to Arms” – a thoughtful jab at the fear prevalent toward the end of Cold War 1.

“Nobody’s Perfect” – self explanatory.

“The Living Years” was a hit around the time my father died. I used to have to turn it off the radio, it always made me cry. Luckily, I’d spoken to my own dad on the previous evening, but like the lyric says, I wasn’t there the morning he suddenly died, I was 300 miles away. It’s a poignant song.

They wrote some good tunes and great lyrics.

Now I’m going to be listening to the '80s pop hits on Pandora for the rest of the day!

True, though they did suffer a blow when Paul Young (who sang a lot of their hits and was one of the forgotten “greats” as far as lead singers are concerned) died quite young, pun unintended. 😦

Also, I think their musical style (though actually quite diverse) simply got mis-labelled as “pop”, and hence they fell by the wayside with the advent of grunge, hip-hop, and so on. 😦

Fun stuff about the SATs. 🙂 (The music video for that song was a hoot, too!)

Okay, let me be honest; that last verse always gets a few (manly!) tears out of me, especially after my own son was born. :o
 
Wow - I had completely forgotten about Mike and the Mechanics. I really dug them back when I listened to them in the 80s/90s. Time to dust off my cassettes. 👍

🙂 That’s not cheating unless you download the videos or strip the audio from them. Not saying that I would ever do a thing like that, no, ma’am! Who, me? 😃

Anyway, we can now add RPR Junior to our list of fans. He was groovin’ to “All I Need Is A Miracle” yesterday evening. (Today, he was listening to Fleetwood Mac. Kid’s got eclectic tastes, or maybe that’s just his dad who runs the CD player. :))
 
Wow . . . no one has mentioned “Taken In?” I can’t be the only one who likes that song.
 
what’s funny is after reading this thread yesterday, on the way home I heard “Silent Running”.
