I am going to be spending a couple of days a week in Baton Rouge over the next few months. Does anyone know of any really beautiful historic Churches that I can visit? I love to visit beautiful old Churches wherever I go, and I’m sure that Baton Rouge has many.

Also how about Perpetual Adoration Chapels or the Latin Mass? Does anyone know if these are available?

Thanks,
Kelly:)

I’m not that familiar with Baton Rouge churches; but if you have some free time to get out in the state, go to Abbeville – it’s probably about a two-hour drive from Baton Rouge, if I remember correctly – and go to St. Mary Magdelene. It’s gorgeous!!! Plus it’s a neat little town.

Oh, yes, this is a beautiful church. One of the seminarians who did an internship at our parish was ordained to the Transitional Diaconate in this church (his home parish) and celebrated his First Solemn Mass there. Absolutely gorgeous.

(To get to Abbeville from Baton Rouge, take I-10 west, take the Louisiana Ave exit in Lafayette, and go south about 20-25 miles)

If you’re in this area of the state, it might be worth checking out St. Martin de Tours in St. Martinville (think Longfellow, Evangeline, etc). neworleanschurches.com/mdetours_laf/index.htm

I grew up in Baton Rouge, and really can’t remember any beautiful churches (a good number of ugly ones, though 🤷) St. Thomas More (in the Sherwood Forest area) does have a Perpetual Adoration chapel.

Oh, yes. I’ve heard of St. Martin de Tours – seen pictures of it – it is gorgeous!!! That would be a good one to visit.

Brotherhrolf, I believe lives in Baton Rouge. Maybe you could send him a p.m. 🙂

I am not familiar with Baton Rouge but I live right outside of New Orleans, on the westbank.
St Louis Cathedral in New Orleans is a beautiful old church! Awesome stain glass windows… well worth a ride from Baton Rouge.
Also St Joseph Church in Gretna (westbank) is really beautiful. It has been remodelled in the last few years. You would just love it. The outside garden is also amazing.

I am a member of the Cathedral parish and have sung in the cathedral choir for twenty years. The cathedral is fine. So too is Our Lady of Mercy, St. Thomas More, St. Agnes and Sacred Heart although they are not old parishes.

St. Agnes has the TLM on Sunday. Mercy has a perpetual adoration chapel. You can go to Mass at St. Agnes and receive Communion kneeling at the altar rail (one of my joys on Ash Wednesday).

I’m not that familiar with Baton Rouge, but if you have a little extra time, I’d highly reccomend stopping at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. That, I believe, is the oldest still-operating Catholic church in the US. It has been burnt down and rebuilt 3 times. It’s absolutely lovely.

Also, St. Joseph in Thibodaux is lovely too:
