Continuing the discussion from Any runners in the forum?:
I usually run solo, I rarely get a friend to train together
I recently had a discussion about running with my spiritual director. I am reluctant to call running prayer. I do see the link between taking care myself and my relationship with God. She was encouraging me to start my runs with conversation with God to dedicate my time and efforts to Him.

THat’s an interesting point. My former pastor ( a fairly opinionated priest) had a theory about runners…he felt like their obsession with running was indicative of them psychologically “running from” something.
Not knowing anything about pro runners, I do think that the people I know that suddenly become obsessed with running do possess these problems and tendencies. The “la la la, everything is just FINE sort of people”. LOL

Nothing against runners. God love them, they s=certianly put the rest of us couch potatoes to shame!
A very healthy pastime, I gather.

@pianistclaire

I would say this pastor is stereotyping.

There are people who take running/fitness to an extreme to compensate for an emptiness, but that is not the majority. There are some narcissistic runners. That’s kind of sad he makes that kind of assumption about a group of people. Many people find peace through running. Calming anxiety. I am reluctant to call it a spiritual experience because it is more physiological. Managing stress is a health part of spiritual health though.

This is just a hunch on my part but I bet there was some envy on the pastors part.

HAHAHAHAHA, yes, He often said he was quite the non-athletic clutz! 🤣

I think it’s more about challenging yourself physically. It can become a little obsessive.
