Is it possible to commit a sin that does not violate any of the Ten Commandments? Or are all sins somehow a breach of the Commandments?

Yes, every sin can be traced back to the 10 Commandments. The 10 Commandments are just the outline. If you read them in the Catechism, it goes into much more depth about each one.

If one takes a highly legalistic approach to the Ten Commandments, one might wrongly excuse many sins because they do not seem to violate the letter of the law.

For example, one commandment says that you should not steal. Is it okay then if I only borrow someone’s property without their permission? What if I trick them into giving it to me? What if I hide it amongst their other things? What if I destroy it? All of these, and more which we could envision, are sins according to the “spirit” or principle of the simple commandment not to steal.

Yes, I agree. The spirit of each commandment encompasses much more than just the simple “Do not do such and such.” Jesus expounded on the this in the Sermon of the Mount. He expanded the laws on adultery and murder to show us that the sins of lust and hate and anger also fall under the 10 Commandments. Being holy means obeying the spirit of the law in all that we do, including our thoughts and actions, what we do and what we leave undone.

I can trace most of my sins back to the first commandment - to put God first. If I did that at all times I wouldn’t do what I shouldn’t do.

I mean Jesus added the commandmwnt to love one another. To us Chrustians that may seem like a given but that is a uniquely Christian thing. This applies to many differwnt examples. I’m also pretty sure that if you look at a guide to the examination of conscience, there is a section about things against God’s Church. Things such as missing holy days of obligation are included there. So it’s pretty much the ten commandments + follow the precepts of the Church + love one another.
