Just curious if there are any fellow comp sci Catholics out there. Currently a student and from what I can tell, not very many Christians in the field.

I’m here. Software has never been my primary job description, but programming and debugging has been part of the job and my life all along, since I was a teenager 45+ years ago.

Would you say you have been treated kindly in the industry? With the extreme liberalism and almost blatant hatred of Christianity I see at university I hope this isn’t present in the industry. Given the liberal slant of Silicon Valley this worries me as a Catholic. @Beryllos

I can’t say I’m harassed about it. Everyone’s nice enough to me. When some of my colleagues were going to lunch and I said I couldn’t eat meat due to it being a Lenten Friday, we went out to a place with meatless options and no one complained about it. I don’t shove it down their throats, and they don’t mock me for my beliefs. We’re there to work, and so long as things get done, we’re all on good terms with each other.

In technology industries, I think people are mostly interested in the results. In software, for example, if you write code to specifications and on schedule, they could hardly care less about your religious beliefs or practices.

An exception might be games and entertainment. If your employer wants you to create immoral content, there’s a problem.

There might be grey areas though. Let’s try to make one up: You work for a company that provides backup and security services – morally neutral, right? – one of their clients is a major porn website, and that’s your new assignment. How do you feel about that? What do you do?

I honestly have no idea. I am stumped. I would have to think on this one.

I remember going to a free lunch and our chief engineer was also there.

I remember her requesting a meatless option being that it was Friday.

Oh good. I think I am just spending too much time at university lol. This younger generation is quite radical.

When you get out to industry you will see that it is much different.

@Fauken @Beryllos

Any tips for working in the industry. I am a senior and graduate next fall and don’t know any professional and would love some tips.

You’re going to be a junior developer. Know that you’ve still got plenty to learn about coding. Put yourself out there and learn new skills. Try new things. Find good senior developers to learn from, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. In industry, the main two things that matter are functioning and efficient code: don’t let perfection be the enemy of good.

And, of course, Stack Overflow is your friend. 😛
