Any Suggestions on web hosting for an alternative to abortion pro-life center? I’m consulting for them and they don’t have much money. We want to move away from our current provider since they cost too much. Just want to pick your brains.
thanks

Build a server (or buy a used dual processor system on eBay, if you build one, go with AMD processors as they are cheaper and just as good or better than their Intel counterparts), get a static IP address, and host it on site. The only thing they have to pay is for the server and for the domain registration. Then, they can simply direct the URL to go to a certain port, and you can then use server software to host the site. This also gives the added bonus of being able to have (virtually) unlimited e-mail addresses and hosting space at no cost. As well, any special services that they want can be implemented on their server without having to pay extra for support.

Considering the organization, it is unlikely that they will have any particular need to huge amounts of bandwidth, and thus it is a viable option to host off their own server. It is also financially beneficial because they can service it rather than have to pay for tech support.

Also, take a look at Fedora Core 4 (fedora.redhat.com). It is a build of Linux that has web and mail servers built in, and very easy to install and use (it just takes a little tinkering for most purposes). Use that, and save them the rediculous cost of going with Microsoft products. And consider, the server will run faster with Linux than Windows.

Thats my suggestion.

Running one’s own server can be extremely expensive. How big is the site? How much bandwidth does it use on average? Maybe it can be share-hosted? I have some extra space laying around. Maybe for some things, they can use volunteer-donated space?

For about $20/year for the domain name (unless you already have that) and $10/month for hosting, I can hook you up.

Great site, many resources. It has Front Page extensions and all that but I never use them. It does have Perl, cgi, php, and all that good stuff.

You can also go directly to my provider, jaguarpc.com

The v200 account I usually use costs me $5/month as reseller, and I charge $10; you can get it directly from jaguar if you prefer.

v200 has 300M space, 15G monthly transfer, static IP address, unlimited POP3 email accounts, 10 MySQL databases, and lots of other stuff. There are other plans; you can view them here. For a good cause I will provide at my cost, and it sounds like this is.

First off, they have a domain and its up and running, just want to switch providers for web (email is handled by a different enitity). I’m thinking of 500+MB of space 2GB of bandwidth and having php with mysql database.

Second, An on site server will not work do the fact that I could get a computer, and set it up but that a 256k dsl will not be able to handle it if we get heavy traffic later on. on site handle of the server could be a problem since I’m not in house.

Third, Well, only less then 150 MB for this current year for traffic, I wonder how much is self traffic (it can’t tell me).
Also any good ways to do free search engines registration??

I have one for 500M space and 25G transfer, my price 7/mo, that I’d sell retail for $14/mo.

It has unlimited POP3 email accounts, and email autoresponders, up to 30 FTP accounts, 15 MySQL databases, and really good tech support.

That’s a v300 package to me. What makes me a reseller is that I have an account I pay $30/mo for, then I get additional ones I can resell for cheap. I can hook you up, or you can go directly to jaguarpc.com and get a package of your choice.

Gosh, if you don’t need me for anything, they have a retail package called GigaDeal, 1000M storage and 45G transfer, 30 MySQL databases, 50 FTP accounts, etc. for $10/month. You might as well go with that.

Of course, all these have php and about all the good stuff you’ll probably want.

Lemme know by post or PM if I can help.

Check with **rc.net ** – they are a Catholic Web host out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Wonderful people.

I’m just trying to pick everybody’s brain . So I’m not trying to pick over people, I don’t make the final decision and it might be a while before the hosting is decided or it could be next week. I’m the presenter of geekiness to thoughs in need at the higher levels… 😃 That and I’m redoing there website.

You could go through Sienna Communications. It’s new and Catholic… Mom was talking about it earlier.

They don’t provide hosting services sadly.
