If you’ve majored in Theology in college, or know someone that does, what advice do you have? I am planning on attending the University of Dallas and majoring in Theology, and after a lot of thought and prayer I know that is what I will be happiest doing, but am concerned about the practicality of it. As in, once I have my degree, what can I do with it? I am thinking of doubling up with Political Science or Education or Psychology or…

So what did you Theology Majors do with your degree? Would you have done anything differently? What were some experiences you felt were opened or closed to you because of what you chose to study?

Anyway, I would appreciate any advice from those older and wiser! 🙂 Thanks!

I got a Theology degree from Steubenville because I wanted to know the Truth.

I worked in the computer lab in college, and was quite good at it. That launched me into a career in I.T. My degree has made me more attractive to Catholic companies hiring IT positions. IT also pays more than most theology careers, so I can support my husband and I (he’s in the grad school at Univ. of Dallas, actually). After he gets his Ph.D. and starts teaching, I’ll turn into a stay at home mom, and most likely homeschool our children. Until then, I need to support us financially, and since I’m really good at IT and can make a decent salary at it, I’m the bread-winner.

I don’t have any regrets over my degree. Some companies may look at my resume and choose to skip me because of what my degree is in, and I know that I wouldn’t have liked working at a place like that in the first place.

You really just need to decide what it is you want to do with your life. You’ve got years to decide that in, though–you don’t have to know right now. Learning the basis of your faith from a great liberal arts institution like U. Dallas wil help guide you to find what you want to do. Even if you get a Theology degree, you can still work in a different field. More often that not, all that really matters is that you have a degree, not what it is in. It is the experiences and talents that you have that will help you get a job in your chosen field.

Thanks for the advice, Almeria! I’m glad you are so happy with your decision to study Theo. How does your husband like UD? (I think they should change their name, because people get it confused so often with UTD and don’t think it’s a Catholic school)

I am, but that was 25 years ago, and I was Baptist at the time. My best advice is to double major (required at Houston Baptist U). For me it is irrelevant since I ended up in a field with few college graduates anyway. Still, I will retire in a few years and will have plenty of time for a second career.
