I have been incredibly blest to grow up with a full-time stay-at-home mom and a work-from-home Dad for most of my life. Now that I am married and getting ready for my own family, I count myself blest once again that I have skills/talents that allow me to work from home as a private violin/viola/cello teacher, and I don’t even need to put my baby down to work! (Well, I might try to put the baby in a sling if I need to demonstrate what the music should sound like!:))

Are there any other work-from-homers out there? What do you do? Are you self-employed or is your home an extension of the conventional workplace? Or can you just take your children with you to work? I thought that would be neat too!

I also work from home - I, like yourself, also teach private music lessons. Mainly woodwind instruments, and some beginner piano. And I also have been a tupperware consultant for almost 3 years. Both of those are very part-time - I take students as I get them, lose some here and there, mainly due to h.s. graduation, and for the tupperware, I do enough to stay active to maintain my discount. A party here or there, some orders for friends and family as needed - nothing that takes away from my family.

This is a neat thread. At the time I don’t work from home, but I have some ideas in case I decide to some day. Ebay is a good place to make some money selling items, I do it every now and then. If you have a special craft you can sell your products on ebay. I’ve done some mystery shopping, but I do it more for fun than income, cause it doesn’t yield much (at least not the ones I’ve been involved with).
We have a lot of electronic equipment for all sorts of media systems and there is a lot we could do with that too, from home. I might be doing some programming and/or translating from home pretty soon too to help out with a company owned by a family member. I dunno, I am interested in seeing what others do.

My husband is a mortgage broker and has his office at our house. It will be intersting when this baby comes in January and I’m also home full-time. I said I’d give him one year until he’s in the shed or renting office space. 😉 I can picture the little tot gripping the baby-gate at the top of the stairs, pointing down there and yelling DA! Or me popping down with my bagel and coffee saying “hi, hon. Busy today?” It’s going to be very hard to let my hubby do his work while I’m upstairs with the baby. I’ll probably be calling him upstairs every 15 minutes to see what cute little thing the baby is doing now. 🙂

My husband and I own a tractor dealership. Yes, we have a business that sales and services a “large name” agricultural equipment such as tractors, cotton and corn harvesters, we also sell and service a well known brand of lawn mowers.

We’ve been in business for 5 1/2 years. My oldest son was 6 months old when we got the business. After working many long days at the dealership, when I was pregnant with #2 son, I decided to invest in a computer at home. I have a “local” computer lady who I bought the system from and she’s wonderful. She set me up at home to where I can “dial up” my computer server at the dealership and its like I’m there! I just trained everyone on what to send to my home for me to work on.

My mother watches the kids while I work only two days a week. Earlier this year, I hired someone to help me. She works at the store three days a week and comes to my house two days a week. She’s taken alot of work off me.

My husband works anywhere from 10 to 12 hours a day and really is never at home except on Sundays 😦

Now, I’m starting to homeschool my oldest son.

Sometimes I feel like I’m going crazy :whacky: But I take a deep breath and realize…I am definitely blessed!

I work at home developing a website www.life.org.nz for my boss who works from his home selling, designing and hosting websites.

For years I have advocated females choosing careers that will allow them to work at home while raising their family. My own daughters did not listen, just Mum on her soapbox.

Now my eldest daughter has a baby and is no longer talking about going back to work & putting him in daycare, she wants a job where she can work at home. Maybe my younger daughters will now take note and plan ahead.

I thought I was going to be able to be a Mary Kay consultant & work from home w/ baby. After spinning my wheels during one major transition after another, I finally faced the facts: I was wrong. 😦

Ah, well. It was a good idea

As long as he is able to complete his work, it sounds like a great situation!

I know my hubby would be jealous that your hubby will be able to “see what cute little thing the baby is doing now” so I won’t tell him;) .

I would love to find something I can do to make money and stay at home with my daughter. Any ideas??? I tried Avon. Spent my profits on gas money delivering and trying to sell it. Also it was too tempting not to buy little goodies for yourself.

I do mystery shopping. It’s just a little money here and there because I live in an isolated rural area and most assignments are too far to drive. But it keeps me in PayPal money when I want to buy scrapbooking supplies on Ebay. (Boy I am SO glad we don’t have to boycott Ebay over the Consecrated Host issue)

I am also a Discovery Toys Educational Consultant. Of course my girls play with my samples, so they are playing with tax deductible toys. I do parties as much or as little as I want, depending on how crazy the rest of my life gets.

If you are interested in working from home and making real money, you could consider becoming a Medical Transcriptionist. MTs get dictations from doctors and type them into the computer. It does require training to learn all of the medical terminalogy. But after your training period, there are transcription companies that will hire you to work from home. BCC will help you get a job through one of them. Or you can go out on your own and get accounts from clinics and hospitals.

I’m seriously considering becoming a part-time MT from home as a second job. Bellevue Community College has a complete MT training course for $1850. It is totally online, so you can take the course from anywhere in the world.

Their website, if you are interested, is : conted.bcc.ctc.edu/medtrans/

I couldn’t help it but I had to say that I have a very good work at home business, and I basically call people and offer them something worth their while. I have a friend who is a stay at home Catholic mom who homeschools her 4 kids. She is the one who introduced me to the home business which is amazing. I am able to do so much with her business leadership and I never knew that I could be a leader and my own boss as well. I will definitely use my business for God’s glory, because He gave me the business.

It’s going to take some restraint on my part, but I think it will work out. I know Steve is very happy that he’ll be able to see the baby so much. it’s going to make my job easier, too, to always have backup.

I’d love to work from home! I can’t do hard physical labour, so a
job at home would be very fullfilling! I want to have my own Catholic store! I don’t care to make alot of money! As a matter of fact, I would just love to have alot of Catholic items and be able to
give them away for free! People love to be able to find things at low cost, and if I was able to provide them items at low cost, it
would be great! Ebay has alot of great Catholic items, and I have quite a few favorite sellers! But, again, it would be nice to just
have my own store! Not on Ebay either! I like the Rosary Army!
You can find out about them by clicking on this link:

rosaryarmy.com

I was thinking of starting my own Rosary give away! As well as medals and Holy Cards! This is more fulfilling to me than being at
a 9-5 job! Catholics should be able to get items for free, or at a
very low cost! Iam still hoping someday to have my own store,
or just collect Holy Cards, medals, Rosaries, ext to give away
for free.

I work from home teaching at an online university. I am able to do most of my work after the kids are in bed or during those “lost” hours of sitting through soccer/swim practice. I have been doing this for about 3 1/2 years and it has been wonderful. We were able to accompany my husband overseas last year - something I never was able to do when I worked in a regular office or even when I taught on-ground classes (for the same university).

I searched for years to find something that was real money, not a scam and could make use of my previous education and work experience.

Hi,
My husband and I own our own business. For 6 years I worked at both the place of business and all the bookwork, etc. at home. As the business grew and our family grew, this became increasingly difficult. (My husband and I have always traded off days staying home with the kids.) With the birth of our 4th child, I finally said I cannot work at the place of business anymore. The next 5 years I spent working only at home.

I really don’t recommend this unless you have someone to watch the children. This is how it was to be in theory for us. My husband was to be home at times but it never really happened. Even if he was home, the little ones knew where I was and wanted only me.

I spent years feeling like I did a bad job of being a mother and was always behind on the work. I would get up early, stay up late, stay in my office while the family was doing other activities just trying to get caught up. I felt constantly frustrated.

I’ve had paperclips stuck in my disk drive, files grabbed and dumped while my back was turned, crying in the background while trying to make business calls.

I have finished and delivered payroll in the middle of the night on the way to birth a baby. Came home from the hospital to a pile of work. No maternity leave here.

Two years ago I moved the office out of the house. What a difference! I can finally accomplish my work in an organized manner. When I am home, I can be mostly just a Mom! It feels wonderful. Previously, I felt like I was always trying to situate everyone so I could get some work done.

People tend to be very idealistic about working at home. I have to stress that you need someone to watch your children at least part of the time.

There are many good sides. I was able to nurse as long as I wished (with the last 2). None of our kids have experienced day care. If someone is sick or there is a day off of school we don’t have to worry since someone is always home anyways.

I am now expecting another baby in 2 months. I will probably combine a couple of half days at my office and bring some work home. Not totally ideal for nursing. I will try bringing the baby with me some. Depends on the disposition of the baby. No point in bringing it and not getting anything done. I have resigned myself to the fact that things will be very hectic for awhile.

Wow! It sounds like you are doing alot of work. I guess that would be difficult. My mom used to do the bookwork for my dad’s construction business, but he quit that to build kitchens instead, so he was home more and could do that himself.

I hadn’t thought about such a large business enterprise from home. I guess I always liked being self-employed because I could control the amount of work and the amount of time that went into that work. I especially like the flexibility of a non-essential industry: I teach private violin, viola, and cello lessons, so it’s no big deal to take a day or even a whole week off once in a while. I can also call the students and cancel with little notice in the case of an emergency, and I look forward to keeping the children around, even while I teach.

Bravi, and hats off to you! How many children do you have, if you don’t mind my asking? What is their age span?
