This is supposedly an “easy reading” Bible translated by Eugene Peterson. I’ve read several positive reviews on amazon.com. It was designed for folks who find the traditional Bible a “hard” read, and thus won’t read it.

Anybody? Thanks!

I despise that particular paraphrase of the bible. Here are a few things you should know. The first is that it is not a translation, but a paraphrase. What you are getting is not Scripture, but Eugene Peterson. Also, it is a paraphrase that uses many modern anachronisms. Also, it is thoroughly protestant and does not include the entire Old Testament Canon. I would not use it. If you are looking for an easy to read translation, then get the Good News Translation-Catholic Edition. That is the bible I gave to my children 8 and 6. As they get older, I will wean them onto the Revised Standard Version and the Douay Rheims. God bless.
 
I despise The Message too.

I’ve got it on E-Sword on the computer and have read sections of it in parallel with a decent translation. What I find is this:
  1. Scripture often says things that The Message does not include.
  2. The Message often says things that Scripture does not include.
  3. When reading the Psalms, many times God is mentioned in Scripture and not mentioned in The Message.
Therefore, even as a paraphrase (which is still meant to give the sense of meaning), The Message is pretty awful.

At my previous church someone was preaching and prepared a message from Scripture. He then thought he’d read the passage from The Message to make things easier to understand. Unfortunately he didn’t read The Message version before he read it in church and it was only then that he found that The Message said totally the opposite thing to Scripture in that case.

Yes, I hate The Message and hate the fact that so many churches welcome such things with open arms. It is not, in my eyes, a Bible.

There are good, easy to read, translations out there. The NIV isn’t hard (it’s not that brilliant though!), the New Century Versioni is easy (it’s the one in the “Youth Bible” I have), the Good News Translation is simple, and if really stuck there are even very good translations produced both for children and for people with learning difficulties.
 
The Good News Translation that they handed out to us when I was in grade school was very good. It was easy to read but didn’t stray very far from the actual meaning of the text. Mine has all of the books in it and it has an Imprimatur.

I would recommend that above any other “easy” translation.
