Background: There are at least 3 or 4 of these in my backyard that I literally stumbled upon after noticing a little soil erosion after some rain. They were there before we moved here. in 2012 but I have no idea what they are or what purpose they serve. If anyone recognizes them, I would be grateful if you could fill me in.

Our home was built in 1969.

What are they made of? And what do they look like if the dirt is removed on top?

Have you ever dug around them to see how big they are?

The little round disc in center appears to be plastic, and the darker round area appears to be plastic or ceramic. They are kind of in a line from the back of our house heading to the sewer line.

I haven’t tried to dig it up yet but it seems to be pretty firm.

They remind me of in-ground sprinkler system heads.

You haven’t been tempted to dig around them? My husband would have had the shovel out right away, lol!

Notice there is one in the foreground and then approximately 8 feet or so apart heading roughly towards sewer line and gas lamp of some sort that we’ve never used.

I wanted to see if I could somehow identify them before digging, in case they were tied to something important. I wouldn’t want to unearth something that could potentially cause harm, especially if it is connected to gas lamp or sewer system lines.

Note: If you haven’t already deduced it, I am not the handiest of handymen when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Yes, probably from 1969 or early 1970s when house was built and that kind of thing was popular around these parts. I might just ask the plumber or A/C guy next time they come out to see if they know.

Could be something weird (Insert Dark Shadows theme song here). 😀

I’m not handiest either, but I sometimes get lost in Google.

Could they be pop up emmiters?

Good work, Titivillus! That may be it. Thank you for taking the time to look into that. Another mystery solved, I think.

Seems like there is a side benefit to donating blood - coming up with helpful ideas 😀
