I know there is a more official name, but I can’t think of it right now. I am interested in starting the process to become one and wanted to hear from anyone who might be a secular Carmelite. Thanks!!

I’m not, but like you I’ve been considering it for sometime. Part of me thinks the reason I started following this forum is to get up the nerve to expore it further. One thing that has been helpful is that the Carmelites are discussed quite a bit here.

I’ve always been drawn to Carmelite spirituality and I’ve gone so far as to talk to my parish priest about the Third Order . . . but I’m not sure yet if my wife would be OK with me taking the plunge.

Pray for me and I’ll be sure to do the same for you!

I think the term you were looking for is “Third Order”. And to answer you, no, not yet. I am a confrere of the order, however, and will be working on becoming a third order Carmelite when I move to Phoenix in about a month. You can find much good info about the Carmelites by going to the source: ocarm.org/eng/index.htm

I’ll be praying for you as you start the journey!

Peace,
Fred

The previous poster, gave a web address for the O. Carms. There are also the Discalced Carmelites. The OCD were the orders reformed by St. Theresa of Avila and John of the Cross.

We’re not called third order any more we are OCDS the S stands for secular. I suggest you try to find a group in your area, I’m sure they will invite you to attend a meeting and see what we are all about. If you do fine a group and they are taking new members you will visit (depending on group) 3 meetings and decide whether or not to continue (they will also decide if you should continue) you will then attend for 6 to 12 months before you take the scapular. etc.
