Just thought I’d post about my own journey. Since I was a little boy I’ve been overweight. Well since December 1 I quit drinking and I quit fried food, bread, pasta, and rice and I’ve been limiting my calories to 1200 and I’ve lost 35lbs! I feel like my prayer life is better and that if I keep this up, I can help others along the way with my example.

Anyone else here that’s on a diet and cares to share their journey?

I should be on one. Reading and sharing here may help me stick to it.

A diet? No. Trying to eat well? Yes.

I’ve always been a little overweight – by the time I graduated from undergrad I was 6’, 240 lb. And not a good 240. I took up powerlifting in grad school, and now I have a smaller waist at 260 lb. I’m trying to drop 30 pounds or so, but I still have to eat a good bit to keep up my lifting.

I have a much healthier approach to food now that my lifting causes me to view decent nutrition as part of my hobby instead of just being a battle I always have to fight.

I don’t really see the difference. My diet is eating better than I was before

I’m cutting back on refined foods and sugar…my taste is adjusting already and I’m satisfied with natural flavours…they become more distinct on their own .
Eating more naturally and being occupied outside (it’s Summer over here) take my mind off food .

Good job on loosing the weight LC! 😃

I consider being “on a diet” to be temporarily following a set of often harsh dietary rules. If I were to reduce my caloric intake to 1200 calories a day, I’d call that being on a diet because it would be extremely restrictive and I could not safely sustain that intake.

Once I get my body fat down to healthier levels, I plan to push my weight up to 300 and lift like a madman to see how strong I can get. But even then, it won’t be “going on a diet.” It’ll just be eating more food.

I keep thinking that i must go on one , @Le_Crouton , but that’s about as far as I get .

Another problem @Le_Crouton is I am partial to croutons 😄 .

Welcome to the forums by the way 🙂 I hadn’t realised you’re quite new.
You’re going to notice a big difference ,I’m sure, of how you handle the Summer heat .Ive noticed with myself I get by way easier when I’m running on light through the heat.

I am! I got into really great shape last year, only to blow it the past couple months. So, back to keeping track of food (healthy foods) and doing my exercises!

Yep - started mine Nov. 2017. I’ve lost 65 lbs in 14 months. Portion control, eliminated all that good sourdough bread and snacking. Eat low fat, Lean Cuisine, yogurt, yellow and orange peppers galore. They had flavor and crunch. I try to stay just below 1200 calories. I feel so much better. I’ve been pretty stable the last few months, so time to kick it up again and lose some more.

My doctor says it’s okay so I’m gonna follow my doctor’s advice

My body has dictated that I avoid gluten and I do feel much better when I don’t consume it. Fewer migraines, no swollen, stiff joints and no bloating.

I eat low carb and have more energy and I am buying an exercise bike today because I hate going to a gym. I’m much more likely to exercise in my house.

I have a protein shake for breakfast and just by making that change I have lost 8 pounds in three weeks.

My husband lost about 35 lbs doing Wheatbelly. But I liked honey in my tea too much to join him.

Then I was standing in line with some friends, and one of them mentioned her husband had lost 85 lbs, and she had lost about 40 doing keto. Hm! Maybe I could get used to tea without honey! Each of my kids had left me with about 10 extra lbs to remember them by…

I cut out my sugar and my grains. The first time I went into nutritional ketosis, I got a bad case of keto flu, and my muscles were cramping, and I had terrible fatigue. So I ordered some electrolyte capsules with magnesium/potassium/calcium in it. My body adjusted before they arrived.

I lost about 15 lbs of baby weight. Then I ate too much junk in November/December, and gained about 5 lbs of it back. Now, I’m back on the wagon and am moving back in the right direction. I’d like to lose around 10 more lbs and re-analyze where I’m at, how my clothes fit, etc. I do notice that when I have dairy, it causes me to plateau a lot more versus when I cut out my dairy in addition to cutting out my sugar and grain.

I swear by low carb and high protein. It is amazing how my diet has changed over the years. The combination of the two keeps cravings away!

ditto although I’m more low carb/high fat/mod protein. At any rate I’ve been eating this way for 2.5 years and have lost and kept about 40 lbs off. I also walk A LOT and go to the gym twice a week. I’ve learned to not eat when I’m not hungry and dont’ eat late at night…stuff like that.

But I also know certain people do well with certain ways of eating…some people have to go low carb but some people don’t (and I envy them lol!)

The low carb thing really depends on whether you care about athletic performance. Carbs are necessary for optimal muscle function, period – the concept of being keto-adapted is junk science from the abuse of data from one small study in Australia.

But if you’re not concerned about athletic performance, it’s a great way to reduce your cravings, thereby reducing your caloric intake and helping you lose weight. But there’s nothing magical about not having carbs; it just restricts your diet so that you get fewer calories.

Being concerned with athletic performance is relative. For me, it means being able to squat 500+ pounds. For my grandmother, it means being able to stand up out of her chair without assistance. Either way, your body’s athletic performance matters.

It’s well-established that everyone should exercise. Another way of saying that is that everyone should maintain some level of athletic performance. We’re all athletes; some of us just choose to only play easy sports, like sitting at a desk. And for those of us who make that decision, the easy sport of standing up and sitting down won’t be so easy at 80.
