Anyone ever hear of a woman refusing an abortion to save her life?

The Church’s position is that abortion is never permitted, even to save the life of the mother. Yet I have never heard of a Catholic woman who has refused to have an abortion that would have saved her life. This woman would be a saint. But there ain’t any. Maybe some priests have heard of one, but I never have.
As you have seen, there’s a reason they call it “practicing” medicine: we haven’t quite got it right yet. As you have also seen, plenty of women have chosen the lives of their babies over their own. That is what mothers DO. And Gianna Molla (who, by the way, was herself a physician) is a canonized saint.

The bottom line is that when we have a choice between saving our hides and saving our souls, we are required to save our souls. The failure to save our souls is irreparable.

And consider the trade-off: to give up eternal bliss in exchange for 20, 30, 40 more years of blood, toil, tears and sweat. What an exchange of treasure for trash.

My wife was diagnosed with cancer in September 1987. At the time she was three months pregnant. Her oncologist immediately recommended an abortion so that she could be treated. Lorraine W. Blair refused based on her Christian beliefs and her trust in almighty God. We pursued a few natural healing options, but she was hospitalized in December 1987 with complications. 36 hours later she passed into God’s presence. Infant Jeffrey nearly died, and by all standards probably should have died, but by God’s grace he became of full health, and today is 24 years old, serving in the US Army.
An abortion might have allowed medical people to give her further treatments, but her heart would have been crushed, and she certainly would have died anyway. God was in this from the beginning, and He still is.

My friend Cecilia did.She has leukemia and was 2 months pregnant when it was discovered. She refused to abort.
Baby died a couple of weeks ago and she is still fighting leukemia. Please pray for her.

Her name is Saint Gionna Molla

This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:

the issues that spurred them are often no longer “hot” or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.

Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.

Thank you to all those who have participated in this discussion. This thread is now closed.
