I’ll put this one under unusual…

He’s kind of lazy and sedimentary. Haven’t been rolling him daily like I should be… I Noticed some moss growing on his head the other day.

I sort of forget that parrots are technically not standard pets, at least not like dogs and cats. I always like pictures and videos of parrots, so they seem a bit more normal to me. The same goes for rats.

Since I don’t have any pets myself, I’m just leaving a parrot and rat picture here because both are so cute:

I had two pet rocks in the 1970s when I was in 6th grade. I started out with one and then my friends decided it was lonely and found it a “girlfriend” rock on the school parking lot/ playground, and then we had a pet rock wedding. One of my friends (female) was the preacher and married the two rocks at recess with all us kids in attendance. My mother was concerned about all this because she was afraid next we would want to have the rocks giving birth, but I think we all discovered boys or something and the rock jokes never got that far.

I’ve had these desert tortoises for a while. The one in back has been with me for 46 years. The one in front I’ve had for 36 years. They’re both hibernating now, as they’ve done every winter for all those years. I’ll see them again around May.

I had a lovely tortoise years ago. I had dug a trench to irrigate my garden and i came home one day and he or she was in it! We asked around but no one had lost one, and so we called it Fred. He was a rascal, very slow whilst being watched and then shot off when you weren’t looking! Loved loopin flowers too. Sadly missed, he died after hibernating one year, some kind of fungus in his mouth.

Thankfully, mine have never been sick as far as I can tell. Where I live is a little more humid than their old desert home about 60 miles to the east, but it is still relatively temperate and dry. The older tortoise had a health crisis about 20 years ago when our terrier dog jumped the fence and mauled it, leaving it with a cracked shell and damaged front flipper. The shell healed after a few months, but the flipper still bears the scars. That terrier dog died about ten years ago, so the tortoise eventually had its revenge.

Yes. My two dogs are the coolest, avant garde, trend-setting dogs in the city. They wear sweaters, get their hair done, and snuggle better than any of the other dogs. When they bark the other dogs pay attention.

My older brother was always bringing home strange animals in our youth (generally without asking my parents first). He had a guinea pig, four parakeets, two rabbits, a baby shark, and a ferret. Not all at the same time, of course.

So peaceful 😊

Your brother sounds like me 🙂. I used to like keeping unusual pets, and my first job after high school was in a pet store. I also had ferrets, parrots, and all sorts of reptiles (including a 12’ Burmese python and briefly, a rattlesnake). I kept sharks too. I had a 100 gallon marine aquarium, and my dad, who was an avid surf fisherman, used to bring back all sorts of sea life. I only have this one picture of the tank from 35 years ago, but you can see a sea bass on the lower left, a California sculpin (the reddish colored thing), and part of a leopard shark swimming up in the right corner.

That one didn’t last very long. I think it was dead within a week. I’m not sure what type of shark it was nor how big it was supposed to get.

Nice. I don’t think my brother’s fish tank was that big. I don’t think he fully thought through his purchase beforehand. 😝

I had some friends down the block who had a pet tarantula. That one always kind of creeped me out.

We kept the tank set up for a few years, but it was a mess and required more maintenance than we often gave it. When we finally tore it down, we gave the remaining fish to a nearby high school which at that time had an excellent marine biology department.

I’ve had a pet frog, 2 pet birds, a lizard, lots of pet mice, pet rats, cats & dogs. Also had some turtles, but they escaped. For a while I may have had an invisible friend, but I don’t think she was a pet.

Do stuffed animals quality as pets? I have an Irish stuffed frog and a giant stuffed puppy my husband surprised me with on Valentine’s day last year.

I saw someone with a potato bug who was a pet… but we didn’t really talk much.

I’ve had many typical pets throughout my life but when my son brought home the red tail boa snake I just about drew a line in the sand. He promised to keep it in his room and was completely in charge of feeding it which he did. He did like to let it roam loose in his room which was a clever way to keep me out of there! Did you know that snake urine stains will NOT come out of carpet? When a door to door cleaning product salesman assured me his product could remove any stain I simply let him embarrass himself and leave quietly.
