Anyone hear of this yet?

Ive been seeing very slight rumors of a new technique purported to be considered for use against abortion doctors, scientists who use embryonic stem cells ect.

Basically, the idea is to target MDs and Ph.D.s who earned their B.S. from a Catholic, Baptist or other religious affiliated University, and petition the Religious authority governing the University to revoke their degree. Colleges and Universities CAN revoke degrees AFTER it has been awarded, even for reasons of misconduct or severe breaches of ethics. (see Dr. Mengeler).

The premise is that Drs who perform abortions, and do ESC research blatantly violate the standards of the religious Institution, and this warrants revoking their degree. Upon revocation of the B.S, the graduate degree, which relies on the undergraduate degree as a requirement, becomes fully null and void. License to practice, Faculty tenure, and Federal funding would all be affected as well. This probably would not apply to MD and PHD who earled an MS in between, but it is thought that enough Drs might be affected to cause quite a stir.

Degrees from Universities of States with a strong Pro-Life majority could be a possibility as well, if the State Legislature enacts statutes that empower the Board of Regents to do so.

My problem with this is that nearly EVERY college or University receives Federal funding, and the Feds probably would not allow this. What does anyone else think?

Wow. A very interesting idea that I have never heard anything about. I wanted to comment, but I have no idea about the legalities or fedral limitations or anything. I would think a very big rate-limiting step would be the difficulty in finding colleges or universities that are courageous enough to do this, don’t you think?

I can see why colleges would never do this.

Consider the implications were a college to revoke a degree based upon behavior…

Usually people view a degree as some kind of denotation of knowledge. At the very least a mark that someone has some specialized knowledge in a given field.
Then we learn that knowledge apparently has nothing to do with it…
After all, the physician still has the knowledge…only now the college is claiming otherwise.
The degree could readily lose credibility.
