Hello all,

Has anyone heard of a fellow named Terry Nelson Johnson? He seems to be some kind of circuit speaker / apologist among Catholic circles. He has been invited to a friend’s (sometimes not entirely orthodox) Catholic college to give a talk on sexuality and I am trying to figure out if he is worth seeing or if it’ll be a scandal or something. It’s a little hard to tell what his angle is from his Web site, which is kind of vague, so I’m wondering if anyone has heard any of his talks before or anything.

Best,

I am reading this article about his talk at Notre Dame and it doesn’t bode well for me.

In evaluating the faithfulness of a given text, it is helpful to look for what is missing. What would you expect a Catholic theologian to say about sexuality and what words would he use to talk about it?

Missing words: marriage, children, procreation, continence, chastity, Pope John Paul II, any pope at all, Theology of the Body, Humanae Vitae, Casti Connubi, Church, Church document.

He apparently discussed Jesus’ sexuality at length. That is interesting to me, because all we know from the Gospels and tradition is that Jesus was celibate.

Now, this was a secondary source giving an account of a talk that I did not hear. So take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Never heard of him.

I have heard Terry present many, many times. He was in charge of (among other programs) the RCIA program at my church. He is an amazing, dynamic presenter who, if you can really listen, can show the way to much joy and healing. He does not contradict Church teaching, but will challenge you to reach a deeper understanding of Catholic tradition. I am so excited for you to have this chance to participate in one of Terry’s talks.

He has come to my Diocese before and he is coming to a parish in my Diocese soon. I heard that he gave strange presentations but that was hear-say and I took that with a grain of salt. Looking at his previous speaking presentations at soulplayonline.com/products, he did speak at the Call to Action National Conference which is a group of dissenting Catholics who are advocating for the Church to change its teaching on marriage, contraceptive, abortion, celibate priesthood, and male-only priesthood. This is obviously a concerning group for a Catholic speaker to present to so I would caution from listening or inviting this speaker.
