My daughter’s classmates have been bringing them in for storytime and the kids are wild about them. My daughter is particularly nuts about them. I’m concerned, though, because from what I can glean, they appear to have a sort of new-agey perspective on some things…Am I being paranoid? Does anyone here know about them? The author is Mary Pope Osborne.

My kids have several of the Magic Tree House books. They do have some hints of new age style thinking. I have read several of them myself so I could determine whether they would adversely affect my children since all children are at a different level of understanding. I suggest you do the same. Read one or two of them and ask yourself if your daughter is grounded enough in her faith and beliefs to be a able to handle the books.

Kolbe Academy Home School–which is very traditional and orthodox–includes this series in their Recommended Reading list.

What, exactly, are you finding that’s problematical?

Hi -

I have read all of the magic tree house books with my children or they have read them to me. I did not find anything that was offensive. I found that they were entertaining and the girls learned about different times is history. My children ( 6 & 8yrs) understand the stories are make believe and we have had good discusssions regarding the stories. Many times they will say that something was impossible or if they are not sure, they have asked if that could really happen.

I think of them as imaginative adventure stories - what kid hasn’t wanted to be a magician at some time and fly through time. (or adult too 🙂 )

I hope I don’t sound too dorky by saying I’ve read them and found them pretty interesting and informative. My younger brothers don’t like them, but then again, they’re not too big on reading anything that doesn’t have to do with skateboarding.
