Does anyone know if Father Manning is in good standing with the church? My friend told me he was on protestant television network talking about Harry Potter and Im guessing he is not another Father Corapi?

If you’re basing a guess that he may not be in good standing on the fact that he appeared on a Protestant tv program or that he discussed or likes Harry Potter… well they just aren’t good reasons. Appearing on a Protestant tv station could do well to defend the faith, to witness to it, or to address an important point on which both sides agree upon (for example abortion or the revival of religion or something). The Church has no position on Harry Potter, ever news story about it was incredibly overblown, and there are many Catholics on both sides of the fence and many still on the fence about Harry Potter. I, for instance, personally feel that if a person wants to throw out Harry Potter then he ought to throw out the Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings, too. I also have deeper arguements for this, but at the same time if someone is opposed to Harry Potter out of reverence for Christ than I most likely have no quarrells with them. My point isn’t to debate these things, just to suggesst that those are not good reasons to question a priest’s standing with the Church.

That being said, he may be a total whacko for all I know! 👍

That being said, read his Q and A’s - he seems pretty sound to me:

Limited exposure: I’ve seen him on a christian channel. The guest I remember was orthodox and Fr Manning seemed to agree with him on a variety of subjects. I made a mental note to watch him again, but like so many of my mental notes…I…they…what was I saying? 😉

Other than that tidbit I don’t know.

I have known Father Manning for many years. My wife and I, and two other couples, gave a retreat for married couples with him once long ago. Unfortunately, he got busy with other things, like being Provincial of his order [Divine Word], so we couldn’t continue.

He has a good background in drama He has used this to introduce Catholic programming into the protestant stations; a great area for evangelization.

He is in good standing with the dioceses around here and frequently speaks at Catholic gatherings.

He seems orthodox. Let him tell you in his own words:

Hey, he’s on Trinity Broadcasting Network, a conservative Protestant telly station. Talk about a place to do some Catholic Apologetics with maximum theological common ground. And let’s be cautious about applying the term ‘evangelisation’ to Protestants. It has its place, but I often find more in common theologically with traditional non-Catholics, especially ‘conservative Anglicans’, than some ‘liberal Catholics’

With all due respect, we must remember that love is the greatest theological virtue. Speak the truth in love. Don’t compromise the former. Never fail at the latter.

And let the magisterium adjudicate whether someone is orthodox.

Well said on all points. The time I saw him he seemed to be a very sincere loving person. I’m sure he’s drawn non-Catholics into the faith, or at the very least, given many a different perspective on the faith.
And I agree with your comment about “conservative Anglicans” and “liberal Catholics”. Many times we are not so far apart, especially “conservative” Anglicans.

by the way, I’ve seen Abp. Fulton J. Sheen’s shows on TBN before as well. He was VERY orthodox.

The orthodox and Catholic churches share a lot of the same teachings.

Yes, I’ve seen him for years before I was able to get EWTN - one of the first priests I’ve ever seen on television!
