Not sure if this is the best category for this, but I’m not sure where else to post.

I’m looking into theology and other Catholic-related degrees offered online. I’m not sure what I want to do with it. Maybe be a youth minister or something.

I’ve just discovered I do not want to stick with the major I am currently in. For the past two years, I’ve been studying to become a sign language/English interpreter. It’s been a really tough decision, but I decided it isn’t what I want to do. It’s a great field, and I love it. But I am not happy in it. I still don’t know what I want to do exactly, but I have always wanted to learn about Catholicism and get a degree in it. Deepen my faith as well as knowledge.

If anyone knows of good programs, list them here. Or if they have degrees in theology or similar degrees. If there are any that aren’t too hefty in price that would be ideal, but I’m open into looking into more.

I know of two. First is Franciscan University of Stuebenville. I took some classes there remotely.

The second is the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College. I earned a masters degree there in theology.

I thought both schools were good. All of the instructors that I had were very supportive.

One thing for both - you must take some courses in residence. I do not know if that’s a thing anymore with the COVID. You also have to take a comprehensive final exam.

Also, I do not know what the price is. You would have to look that up.

You might want to take a course or two at each to see which you prefer.

The University of London Bachelor of Divinity degree is one of the most respected theology degrees in the UK, and you can study for it anywhere in the world the University of London Worldwide. The University of London is a federal university, and the BD used to be offered by a number of colleges, Catholic as well as Anglican. The last college to offer the BD was Heythrop College, a Jesuit college specialising in theology and philosophy. Heythrop College no longer exists, but the BD, which is now offered by the University of London Worldwide, is under the academic leadership of programme director Dr Elizabeth Burns, who was previously on the staff at Heythrop.

Being an ASL interp would allow you to make money. Maybe look into what you could expect to be able to earn with a theology degree before making the switch, especially if you are carrying debt with your schooling.

Plus, interpreting is very flexible so you could easily go to school while working, unlike some majors, and you can also do it part-time to supplement your income.

Just keep an eye on your debt so you don’t get walloped unexpectedly when you graduate.

Currently I don’t have any debt- I’ve been doing my best to avoid loans and pay out of pocket. I am still thinking about whether to interpret or not, but I have a backup plan if I do decide to drop interpreting

Sounds like you are planning well 🙂 I have just seen a lot of people make mistakes when radically changing their majors!

Christendom College, Holy Apostles College, and Ave Maria University all have online graduate programs in theology. Christendom also has online graduate certificates in various theological disciplines if you are looking for a shorter course. Another valid option is Catholic Distance University, which has degree and certificate programs in theology at both the undergraduate and graduate level. All four institutions are either regionally accredited or, in the case of CDU, nationally accredited and in the process of attaining regional accreditation. All four are also considered Catholic colleges in good standing, and frequently make the Newman list.

You might want to look into Catholic Distance University. They offer a Bachelor’s and Master’s in theology and also a number of certificate programs. Everything is offered entirely online. (I tried including a link but the system wouldn’t let me. You should be able to easily find it with a search engine.)

Holy Apostles College and Seminary (HACS). You can do an entire MA in Theology online like I did. Their cost per credit hour is low compared to most and you don’t have to do leveling theology classes if you don’t have an undergrad in theology. For instance, Steubenville will require undergrad courses prior to you starting the Masters.
HACS is regionally accredited (important) and is an accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools.

Hillsdale College was founded by abolititionists before the Civil War. The founders were Free Will Baptists. While I don’t think it still has a religious affiliation, it’s definitely not Catholic.
