I got my first issue yesterday. What was I thinking?? I know this is an old and venerated publication, but it seems to be completely heretical. The articles seemed dismissive of Church doctrine, while another pondered why faith is evaporating in Europe, especially Italy. Well, duh, you empty a religion of doctrine and younger generations drift away from it…The letters to the editor were of the “who are the BISHOPS to tell me how to vote?!” variety. They seem anxious for the Holy Father to move on (what then?). I ended up tossing the issue in the trash, and I usually never do that.

What are your opinions of this magazine?

I’ve been wondering about Catholic magazines lately. Which ones are the best? Orthodox, but not constantly harping on the Post-Concilior Mass; compassionate, but not…well, not “U.S. Catholic”(they may as well be Unitarians!). Any suggestions?

Never heard of the Commentary mag… sounds not-so-good though.

Catholic mags I recommend -
  • This Rock (Catholic Answers own!)
  • crisis (great news/analysis mag)
  • Adoremus Bulletin (society for the authentic renewal of the liturgy)
  • The Catholic Answer (good basic apologetics)
  • First Things (more academically inclined… great essays)
  • Logos (Journal of Catholic Studies, another academic one but also pretty good)
  • LayWitness (the Catholics United for the Faith mag)
  • National Catholic Register (not Reporter!!) (best weekly Catholic US/national newspaper)
  • Magnificat (great monthly missal with daily Mass readings and wonderful meditations/articles!! GET IT!)
I’m sure there’s more too…

The only magazine of that name I can find, is Jewish - one would hardly expert them to be “orthodox Catholics” 🙂

If there is a Catholic publication of the same name, a link would be helpful - if it is online. ##
