A priest is giving a series of spiritual talks with the ideas in this book being the primary focus. Just wondering if anyone has read it and your thoughts on it. Thanks
I am so glad to hear you say that you found St John of the Cross to be easier to understand than St Teresa of Avila. I’d been trying to read St Teresa for years and just struggled like crazy with it. Then I opened up St John and it made perfect sense!I read it years ago when I was in formation for becoming a Discalced Carmelite of the Secular Order, OCDS.
It has to be understood in the context for which St Terese wrote it and whom she wrote it for, the nuns of her order.
The aspects on prayer however, apply to everyone one seeking deeper levels of prayer.
St Terese was not a good writer, as even she admits. So, she’ll often go off on tangents before returning to the point she’s trying to make.
Personally, I preferred St John of the Cross, which was easier to read because he was well educated and a good writer.
A good book to help you through The Way of Perfection, is, “The Fire Within,” by Fr Thomas Dubay.
