We thought it was good, albeit very “action-y” Here’s a review

<<The Island – Suspenseful, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller about two clones (Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson) on the run from a private detective (Djimon Hounsou) hired by their ruthless creator (Sean Bean) who manufactures “product” for rich people needing spare body parts. Director Michael Bay’s thriller has the usual mind-numbing explosions and car crashes but, together with production designer Nigel Phelps, succeeds in creating a convincing futuristic environment while conveying a positive overall message about the sanctity of life and censure of cloning. Much action violence, scattered profanity, rough and crude language, mild sexual encounter and innuendo, an irreligious comment, a birth scene and nonexplicit urination scenes. A-III - adults. (PG-13) (Universal) 2005 >>

This film was a real eye opener and really shows why the church’s position on human life is so important.

I think this might also be why it wasn’t premoted very much and why it didn’t do so great in the theatre.

I loved this movie… I was counting down the days until it came to dvd…

Awesome movie!

I haven’t seen it yet, but I want to. I actually got to see parts of it filmed in downtown Detroit, where I work. It was interesting to see how tedious filming movies can be. There was a short scene filmed right outside my building. The street was blocked off and there were all these cars lined up. They were showing this futuristic bus pass by and each take the extras had to go back to their original place and the cars had to slowly back up. It went on for over an hour for probably a 5 second shot. No wonder it takes almost a year to complete a movie.

It gave people a chance to consider the moral (immoral) aspects of cloning that most people wouldn’t perhaps think about.

Buy a copy and use it to educate friends and family as to why it is never licit to approve of human cloning.

I listened to a woman defend aborting physically and mentally disabled babies in front of a room full of disabled people. It seems incredible but she didn’t seem to realise how insensitive she was being. Although I wasn’t on the agenda I asked to speak and did so on behalf of my brother who has Down Syndrome, and all people born with disabilities.

Some people just can’t seem to ‘connect the dots’ until it is pointed out to them, and that is what we must do whenever possible.

DH and I tried to rent it last night but there were no copies available. Apparently it’s doing better in the rental market than on the big screen… Can’t wait to see it!

Hey, it is a good movie! I love Charlotte Johanssen. Really brings to light how impersonal cloning is and the implications it has for human life.

I saw the movie in the theaters over the summer and was quite surprised and impressed by its pro-life stance, just like the the review for lifesite. I’m surprised it took this long for a mention of this movie to pop up here.

Something else that the lifesite reviewer touched on, and that I noticed in the movie: Thanks to the events of Spring 2005, whenever someone mentions “persistent vegetative state”–as Sean Bean’s character does in the movie–me and countless other pro-lifers automatically think “Terri Schiavo”.

When the day comes when this question needs to be addressed by the Church, I’m sure the Magisterium will decree that cloned humans have souls as well, that all humans have souls regardless of how they are conceived.

I was also surprised when I searched for a topic on this movie that there wasn’t one. My dh and I were so surprised by this movie, we really hadn’t heard anything about it (we don’t have cable and only rent movies, so we are often behind on what’s new! lol).

I think the Church has spoken about clones or at least in vitro babies having souls–it seems it would be related. I can’t find the reference right now, maybe someone else can. If not, I’ll try to locate it later.

OK, we finally saw it! It was good, although very ‘action-y’ as someone had mentioned. I was a little disappointed the whole underground operation was not exposed to the public; it would have been interesting to see the reaction. Also, I was hoping either Lincoln or Jordan’s “policyholders” would have been horrified to realize their clones were living, breathing humans and instead of using them, tried to protect them (imagine?) Another interesting twist would have been for Jordan to willingly sacrifice herself for her dying “owner” (which would have been totally undeserved by the owner yet morally superior of Jordan) or vice-versa.(imagine??!! An owner trying to save his/her clone after realizing the true humanity of the clone?) I think a sequel needs to be made! 🙂

The young woman’s name is Scarlett Johansson…

What a knockout she is.

(Sorry to be the spelling police today…)
👍

The other thing I wanted to mention was that the movie reminded my dh and I of 2 old sci-fi movies with social messages–Logan’s Run and Solient Green (sp???)

I also think the whole underground thing would have been exposed to the public when all the clones were “released” at the end. I mean, they had to go somewhere and they would be perfect matches with other people and some of them even shared memories!!! That was my take anyway! Obviously that was for our imaginations to take over and not in the movie.

A good point! Where were they supposed to go? Would they get the same rights as everyone else? How would the originals feel about their clones? I guess my imagination has taken over! 😃 Still would have been great to see it played out. If they had cut some of the long action scenes, there would have been time to develop the story further… Still a great story, very relavent to our times.

I agree, a few less chases and explosions and some more character development or delving into what happened when the truth was reveiled, but you take what you can get! LOL 😛

Hey, it was better than I expected from the movie industry. Someone managed to slip that movie in under the radar.

I equated the whole ‘right’ issue to slavery. After all, that is the whole issue with ‘Personhood’. Who is entitled to have ‘rights’ and who isn’t?

Most people think of an embryo, ‘just a bunch of cells’ right? most people don’t stop to think that those ‘cells’ are adult human beings in development. Babies, toddlers and adolescents are also adult human beings in development.

The Island is a movie that Catholics, and all pro-lifers, need to promote.

I assume you’re talking about Bill Murray in Lost in Translation.

I saw it and thought it was ok, but couldn’t figure out for the life of me what the big deal was that it has Oscar talk associated with it.

I’m also going to have to rent the Island. My son also told me it was really good, although his wife didn’t care for it that much.

Lost in Translation----yuck. I just didn’t get it.
