Like me, 😛 !

Me and my best friend went to a movie, gave each other a bottle of scotch, and went to a Patronal Mass. I like St Valentine’s Day alone. Any singles have traditions? I got my mum a flower, same for gran’.

I’m lucky there’s a parish here named after him, and the High Mass this evening was beautifully edifying.

I just live life normal on Valentine’s Day. That, of course, means spending the night watching TV while my cat sleeps on my lap.

I’m married, but The Husband was on a business trip on Valentine’s Day so I was indeed alone. We don’t acknowledge this day anyway, so neither of us felt like we were missing anything by being apart. (Compared to its status in the US, Valentine’s is barely a thing in France.)

Here in the U.S., the stores need something to put on their seasonal shelves between Christmas and Easter. 😜

It goes: Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day/Easter, Summer/4th of July, Back-to-School, Halloween, and back to Christmas. Without Valentine’s Day, there would be a big gap.

Having grown up in the States and worked in stationery/office supply retail there for eight years, I do remember this being the case. There was a section of the shop that was dedicated to seasonal merchandise. Without daisy-chaining holiday observances the shelves would have been sporadically empty, and we can’t have that, now can we? 🤓

It was my first as a widow. I did what I do on all the other holidays. Went to Mass and hung out with Jesus. He’s always home, and always there for me. It was actually quite nice.

It’s odd you mention that, because I watch Euronews and France 24 (both in French) and they act like it’s a big deal. Maybe it’s to confuse us anglophones who are also francophiles.

Valentine’s exists in France, but it’s not observed on any level nearing American customs. Florists and certain restaurants are the principal beneficiaries, but no one I know received flowers or was treated to a fancy meal out.

I wasn’t serious, although they talk about it a lot. I mean, France is one of the most visited countries in earth, and people think Paris is romantic, let’s put the two together! (I know there’s more to France than Paris, that’s like assuming all of America is New York). I barely celebrate the day here, I mean, my niece gave me a pity Valentine.
