AoG commercials

Have y’all seen any of these commercials on TV? The one I saw made it seem like this blind man started going to church and now he can see?

You do not need special churches for miracles. Ask God with a loving heart to heal someone who is sick…
 
I haven’t seen any. I suppose they air during regular programing and not the paid infomercial that most faith based broadcast follow. It does seem to be following the Mormons in using new media as an evangelistic tool
 
At least the Mormons advertise the family values/moral code of their faith.

If I were blind and heard about this, I would go. If I was not healed, I would sue for false advertising 😛
 
The way the TV commercials made it seem like is this guy was blind, went to an AoG church, and was miraculously healed. It is of all about 15 sec worth. It gives you this website to go to. I haven’t even bothered watching the other videos. I was initially only shocked because it seemed like the message of the commercial was “Come to AoG and be healed” :eek:
 
Why not advertise the fact that God can and does heal people? If a seeker goes to AOG and becomes healed and loves the Lord, then why is that wrong? He is then a little closer to the truth and on the right path so far. And healed. As long as somewhere he learns it’s not a 100% guarantee, he’s probably unharmed at worst.
 
I know there was another thread about the AoG and many are truly in love with God but there are so many AoG churches (all independently “governed” by whoever is the pastor with no centralized authority – similar to Baptists) and many of them promise great miracles as part of the package deal of faith. Remember, they are a “pentecostal” group after all. Some don’t believe you are Christian unless you speak in tongues!

But again, these are overgeneralizations because the internal diversity within the AoG is so great.

As for this commercial (I live in Brazil so I haven’t seen them or even heard about them), well, I think it is a little daring to “promise” miracles (as many AoG do in fact – especially in Brazil where they are the second largest denomination after Baptists) but Jesus healed several blind people, Paul had the scales drop from his eyes when he went to see Ananias and I think blindness is an analogy for walking without Christ anyway. So I see the aim of the commercial more at showing the world how to come out of one’s spiritual blindness (à la “Amazing Grace” – “… was blind, but now I see.”)
 
I was raised in the A/G, went to an A/G college (as did my husband, whose father and grandfather are A/G pastors)… I could go on. I feel qualified to speak here. 😉

As another poster commented, it is probably “spiritual blindness” that is the point of the commercials (which I haven’t seen). The A/G does believe in miraculous physical healing, however they also know that sometimes God says “no.”

It was suggested that the A/G churches are independently governed, like the Baptists. This is not true, at least not in the US. The A/G in the US has a presbyterian government. The pastor I grew up under was the presbyter for our state.

All that said, it is true that speaking in tongues is considered the “initial physical evidence” of the filling of the Holy Spirit. One of my college roommates was a spiritual basketcase because she had never spoken in tongues and thought God didn’t “want” her.

Actually, there are two reasons that this is a flawed idea. First, and the lesser of the two, if a man is NOT healed, what will that do to his faith? How many times have we seen people pray for healing and there is none on this earth? Holy, devout people? And how many times does that shake their faith? I used to work with a man who went through this. He prayed that a family member be cured, and they died. It almost made him give up on God. I pointed out that they were healed beyond his prayers, and with time, he understood.

Second, and more importantly, we are told by Jesus that we should not base our faith on signs. Blessed are they who believe but have not seen…
 
“I was blind but now I see”…I’d give them the benefit of the doubt they were playing off the words of “Amazing Grace” not promotiing physical healing…although as I understand they do believe that healing is tied to Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.
