Apostles' Creed at Mass

This morning when I was at 7 AM Mass, when it came time for the Creed, father announced “We will now profess our faith using the Apostles’ Creed”. Now, every Mass I have ever been to in my life the Nicene Creed has been used. Has this always been an option at the celebrant’s disposal or is this something new with RM3?
 
With the new GIRM, the Apostles Creed is now a regular option at all Masses. This is for the US, it has been an option in other countries for a while. Prior to that, the Nicene Creed was to be used except for certain special reasons such as Masses primarily for children.

In addition to what others have noted: And typically the Apostles Creed is used during Easter, because of its relationship to Baptism.
 
I actually prefer the Apostles Creed. My home parish uses it, while the other parish where I attend mass uses the Nicene. I understand the heresies which necessitated the Nicene, but I think that it is a bit overkill, takes more words than necessary to make a point, and I prefer to call God “creator” instead of “maker” because of how I have always viewed those words. I recently read up on the Arian heresy, and I came out of reading about it with the impression that the Nicene Creed was almost unnecessary, and perhaps an overreaction. Anyway, I don’t mind it and I don’t mind saying it, I just prefer the Apostles Creed. I’m glad that it’s an option and that my home parish uses it.
 
Most of the time, the Nicene Creed is used at my home parish and other parishes I visit. I do notice the Apostles’ Creed was used during Easter time more but sometimes at other points of the year, will the Apostles’ Creed will be recited.
