The director of the RCIA in a local parish stated that the Church says we do not have to believe in apparitions, specifically Fatima and Lourdes. My response is why not if the Church approves of them as true apparitions. What is the official teaching on apparitions that have been approved by the Church as being real?

The Church never mandates belief in a Private Revelation. She does declare some - Fatima, Lourdes, etc - to be worthy of belief. That is they are in keeping with Church teaching and there is good evidence that a holy supernatural force is/was at work there. However they are not an element of faith.

Note that you don’t have to believe that the sun will rise tomorrow morning, but I wouldn’t bet real money against it happening.
