I only heard applause once, and that was after some comments Father made after Mass that were very nice and pro-woman. I joined in because I liked his comments very much. 🙂

I think appauding musicians would be weird, since they are doing it as a service to God, and hopefully not for their own ego gratification.

The mass technically ends after the closing prayer, so I don’t really have a problem if applauding occurs afterwards before the dismissal.

We had applause 2ce in our mass.

At once of our scrutiny’s as the catechumen were dismissed, the congregation clapped for us as a welcoming, we were a large class and the priest had made a comment on how wonderful it was that there were so many of us and that it was a blessing for the whole church.

The second time was after we were all confirmed, he had us turn and face the congregation, and there was some applause to welcome us. I think it was just a way for the congregation to welcome us, since it was such a community event.

But other than that, no I can’t recall any.

We had a soloist (age 12) singing a hymn at the end of communion in our parish once, and Father rebuked the assembly for clapping. He explained, “it’s not a performance, it’s a prayer!” I was very pleased, but a few people confronted him after the Mass.

The only time I personally feel comfortable is when we are celebrating as a community (e.g. baptism, confirmation, marriage).

God Bless,

Robert.

Father was right and it was a teachable moment when he was confronted.

This past Sunday the lay person who was illicitly offering a talk in place of the homily was applauded after he finished his speech.

That’s a two-for-one abuse!
