So, I was just wondering… can religious priests be appointed to the office of Bishop? I know there have been in the past (like one of the popes was a Dominican that’s why we have the white cassock for popes), but I don’t know of any who are nowadays.

All of the bishops I know of were diocesan priests before being appointed.

I ask this, because I was wondering, would it be possible (I’m not asking if it would be likely) for a priest from the Institute or the Fraternity to be appointed as a bishop or cardinal or something? It might not happen anytime soon, but just wondering. Does canon law say anything about it?

Because, if a FSSP priest were ever appointed bishop, does this mean he would have to celebrate liturgies in the Novus Ordo at pontifical masses.

Thanks!

Sure , religious priests can certainly be appointed as bishop. Most notably is the bishop of Boston who is a Franciscan, and whose name escapes me at the moment.

I don’t know what an FSSP priest would do if he were appointed as bishop. It hasn’t come up yet, but I would suspect that any appointed bishop would want to celebrate the sacraments in the mode and rite that the faithful in the diocese expect.

Yes, they can. I am sure that members will form a list here, so I will begin with the highest ranking American bishops who are members of religous communities or societies of apostolic life.

His Emminence Sean Cardinal O’Malley, O.FM.Cap.
Archbishop of Boston

His Emmience Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

I think that when the member of a religious community becomes a bishop he ceases to be a member of the community. He may retain some contact and relationship to it, but as a bishop he cannot be subject to its discipline etc.

In fact, there are 10 Jesuit cardinals. This is by far the most for any religious order.

The years are the conclave year.

Archbishop Charles Chaput is a Capuchin. He wears regular Episcopal garb, but Sean Cardinal O’Malley regularly wears his habit.
