I am about to have a daughter and wish to choose a name appropriate for Baptism. Are the names “Violet” and/or “Juliet” acceptable?
 
I coordinate baptisms at my parish and we get all kinds of names. Some we can’t tell if they are male or female. it used to be that you had to have a saint name, but now it just can’t be a name that goes against Christianity. So you can’t name a child Lucifer for example.
 
there is at least one saint Julie (Billiart)

If you cannot find a saint name you can go back to what the name means. Certainly Violet connotes some saintly qualities, especially those of modesty, virtue and faithfulness are attributes of the Virgin Mary as well. and violet is a liturgical color.

It is a great tradition to be baptised with the name of a saint, but no rule that says it has to be. Besides it is always possble that her name will be that of a saint some day.

Of course they are.

Juliet derives from Julius and there are several saints with this name.

Violet has no non-Christian connotations. While not a saint name, a middle name can be a saint name.
 
Just be careful with Violet, since kids will invariably call her “violate” or make purple jokes. A man once told me that the best way to pick a child’s name is to stand on the back porch and yell it several times at the top of your lungs. If you’re not embarrassed, it is probably a good name. Violet does not offend Christian or societal sensibilities. You certainly would not name your child Lucifer because it offends religious sensibilities, nor would you name her Hitler, Space Monkey, or Marsupial for societal reasons.

It is somewhat amusing to me how many times “Will the kid get teased?” is a factor in choosing the name. 😛
 
Thanks to all who weighed in on this topic. We have decided to go with Violet.
