Approved Marian litanies

Recently at my parish, during a May crowning, there was a “creative” litany recited in which Mary was given various names that are not official, for example “Mother of the marginalized” This really rubbed me the wrong way.
I would like to respond to this with a a rational explanation about why we should not just willy nilly make up such community prayers as this. How do I explain this? As usual, I am often at a loss when it comes to putting things in words in defense of the faith.
Are there “approved” devotions and who approves them?

I don’t have an answer about who approves the litanies, but there is a long history of them, dating back to the early centuries of the Church. The Catholic Encyclopedia has an interesting article on the Litany of Loreto, and litanies in general.
