Archbishop Ranjith on resistance to the Motu Proprio

Archbishop Ranjith, secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, was one of Pope Benedict’s first appointments to the Roman Curia.

He recently said the following about the disobedience of many Bishops, in using their authority to attempt to make the Motu Proprio null through this “little, tittle rules”
Abp. Ranjith: “The motu proprio Summorum Pontificum on the Latin Liturgy of July 7th 2007 is the fruit of a deep reflection by our Pope on the mission of the Church. It is not up to us, who wear ecclesiastical purple and red, to draw this into question, to be disobedient and make the motu proprio void by our own little, tittle rules. Even not if they were made by a bishops conference. Even bishops do not have this right. What the Holy Fathers says, has to be obeyed in the Church. If we do not follow this principle, we will allow ourselves to be used as instruments of the devil, and nobody else. This will lead to discord in the Church, and slows down her mission. We do not have the time to waste on this. Else we behave like emperor Nero, fiddling on his violin while Rome was burning. The churches are emptying, there are no vocations, the seminaries are empty. Priests become older and older, and young priests are scarce.”

Clearly, the Archbishop thinks the salvation of the Church depends upon the restoration of the Traditional Mass - a Mass that was preserved thanks to ArchBishop Lefebvre.

Wow. It sure is refreshing to hear talk like this coming from a member of the Curia. Hopefully it won’t be long before the Archbishop gets a Red Hat.

Of course, since the bishops in question are disobeying the motu proprio anyway I don’t expect this to have much impact. Unfortunately there are only two things that has any chance of bringing these Bishops into line.
  1. Pressure form the faithful to implement the moto and expand the availability of the Latin Mass.
  2. Action by Rome to censure Bishops who fail to properly endorse and implement the provisions of the moto.
The first requires enough people backing the Latin Rite to evangelize it, push for it, and attend it. Encourage any interest in it within family friends and/or parish.

The second requires that the errant Bishops be reported to the proper authorities so that investigations can be made. Don’t let them get away with it.
