I was listening to KDKA radio here in Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon, the announcer reported the news that the pope had named a new leader for the Pittsburgh archeparchy.

She pronounced it Ark-E-Paw-key.

It didn’t sound right to my ears, can someone confirm this.

correct pronunciation

arch-ep-arky, with the stress on the “ep”. 😃

We’ll, an “r” sound should have worked its way in (“par” vs. “paw”), but it is otherwise correct. Maybe that’s just a Pittsburgh accent! 😃

Think arK-an-jel vs. arCH-di-esis

When the second part of the compound starts with a vowel, the “ch” becomes a “k” phonetically.

We wish our new Metropolitan ArCH-bi-SHep William many blessed years!

Well, I stand corrected! 😃

To say “arK” better reflects the classical Greek pronunciation. In my opinion the better pronunciation would be “arH-ep-ar-hee.” This reflects the modern/ecclesiastical Greek pronunciation. In the English world though, it seems acceptable to say “arCH” so.
