I asked this question in the Ask an Apologist thread but they did not choose it to give an answer. I am kind of confused from the sermon at All Saints Day mass. Even though they may not be canonized, are all people who are spending eternity with God considered saints?

Yes. Our priest explained that the latin word for saint is “sanctus.” Sacred, holy — the only difference being that there is not a formal pronouncement by the Church that leaves no doubt about the person’s sanctity. Many are there in heaven, but we don’t have the solemn assurance from a proclamation. Make sense? This why we celebrate all of these unknowns in a universal feast to honor all who lived a faithful life.

That’s me and you, some day, hopefully! Alleluia!

And our priest said in “All Saints Day” Mass that we are all “Saints in training”. 🙂

Yes, all souls in Heaven with God are saints. BUT also there are saints here on earth who are alive now, and are destined to be with God. They are saints as well, just not yet dead or in Heaven.

A priest at a church where I went to on the Holy day also used the term “Saints in training”. He did not mean that we are already saints. He just tried to imply that we ought to live our lives according to the teaching of Christ.

Those who are in Heaven are saints.
