Are Catholics allowed to communicate with Archangels?

I have a very strong attraction to converting to Catholicism even though I am 70! However I am concerned about whether my practice of communicating with Angels (mainly Archangels) is allowed, or will be endorsed or frowned upon. I don’t want to take this important step and make a fool of myself by talking about angels if I am accepted for conversion. Thank you. Stephen.

Not sure what you mean by "communicating " with angels.

You are free to ask the angels to pray for you, or to ask them to help you in some appropriate way, such as asking your guardian angel to help you.

You are also free to talk to the angels as you would talk to saints and other friends.

However, if you’re claiming an angel speaks to you, then that’s an unapproved private revelation and can’t be discussed on here due to TOS. I would suggest talking to your priest.

No they don’t talk back (not yet). I pray to angels, and Saints and I notice subsequent changes in my life, and although the angels don’t talk to me, I often feel some kind of spiritual response, but isn’t that the same as having prayer’s answered?

St. John of the Cross taught strongly not to seek supernatural experiences, one of the reasons being that the evil one can respond. I would STOP asking for responses if that’s what you’re doing. I’ve done similar things before becoming Catholic and the results were disastrous and I’m still going to a diocesan deliverance ministry.

But if you’re just talking to them and asking them for prayers, ignore me.

Thanks. I guess I was worried that a priest would say that could not convert because of my practice. I didn’t want to be laughed at or not say anything about how important it is to me. In fact it’s because of the angels that I feel the need to convert to Catholicism, but can I say that openly to a priest?

It may be useful to explore more what angels really are and what they can and can’t do, and the place to do that is official Church teachings. I know from experience that angels have been appropriated by several new-age sort of authors who claim things that seem good, but turn from reality, which could lead you down the wrong path.

I’m using prayer to ask for guidance and help to make decisions and I get responses, but not in the form of words but in the form of action. For example if I am concerned about whether I should do A or B, I pray to one of the Archangels and very soon after I don’t feel confused any longer. Instead it feels like the decision has already been made for me and I feel it is absolutely the right decision and so I accept it. I understand this as faith. And it’s another reason why I feel I am being called to God and the Catholic Church. If this doesn’t seem right please let me know as this is the reason for my original questions. Many thanks

Yes a definite difference in my perception - Saints feel life living beings and angels feel more spiritual, (without earthly attachments).

Doesn’t sound like there’s anything wrong with that. But you said “not yet” regarding their responding- and I’m not sure if you really are expecting something-, but if so I am urging you not to desire or even expect any supernatural response. Been there, done that.

I’ll leave you with this before I go

I’m very much aware of all that new age stuff, I don’t read any of it and it irritates me somewhat as I feel it is so superficial. No I am serious about praying to angels from a religious point of view.

Oh ha, well there you go, I think you’re good but I would tell everything to a priest before listening to any of us

Thank you for you advice and suggestions. I will visit my local priest. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to my thread. Love to all of you. Stephen

Well, given that the title specifically says Archangels, we do consider them in the same regard as Saints - there are even particular liturgies for them.
