Are catholics allowed to go to a non-catholics funeral?

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s. We were taught this rule: you may attend a wedding or funeral of non catholics but you may not participate…you can be there only to observe the service. I was shocked by a liberal priest who told me you can go to a protestant service on Sunday if you can’t get to a catholic church.
I told him I wouldn’t do that because I have to answer to God when I die. He just looked at me.
