The sad thing is they can’t even have a friend that is not a JW. I can’t meet with either of them on an individual basis. I have also read that once they are JW’s they can’t very easily get away from their faith even if they want to.
Years ago a JW lady came to my door, (this is when I was away from attending the Catholic Church,) I asked her if I could ask her a question. She smiled and said Yes. I asked her
why they didn’t believe in Jesus. She smiled and said, “I hear that a lot, by the way we do.”
Anyway through conversation she knew that I had been raised Catholic, we did set up a Bible Study together. Only with the conditions that we could be friendly to Argee that we could Disagree on things. From there the Bible Study went on for years… I did attend their Kingdom Hall only twice. (just to visit, I wasn’t ready to Join any other church, she knew this.)
Years ago, JW’s did celebrate Christmas, with the Tree ect. Now they don’t, they feel the tree is of Pagan Roots. (not to mention that they feel Dec. 25 is not the Birth Date of Jesus, they feel the “real” date of his birth is not known, only the time of year.) I have many of their books, their Bible, and have had the Watch Tower and Awake Mag. and have read them over the years.
In their book Reasoning from the Scriptures under the heading of Jesus Christ on page 209 it states:
**Jesus Christ:
Definition: The only-begotten Son of God, the only Son produced by Jehovah alone. This Son is the firstborn of all creation. By means of him all other things in heaven and on earth were created. He is the second-greatest personage in the universe. It is this Son whom Jehovah sent to the earth to give his life as a ransom for mankind, thus opening the way to eternal life for those of Adam’s offspring who would exercise fatih. This same Son, restored to heavenly glory, now rules as King, with authority to destroy al the wicked and to carry out his Father’s original purpose for the earth. The Hebrew form of the name Jesus means “Jehovah is Salvation”; Christ is the equivalent of the Hewbrew Ma.shi’ach (Messiah), meaning “Anointed One.” **end of quote from their book Reasoning from the Scriptures.
Now do I think they are a “Christian Group”? Yes, I do…I just think they are **confused **about a few things…like most Protesent Groups.
They do believe in the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. They just don’t believe all three are One. They do Believe that the Father sent Jesus and then Jesus sent the Holy Ghost. They do believe that Jesus was with the Father and that all things were created through Him (Jesus).
I think we as Catholics need to be a little more understanding of JW’s. Like others who are quick to “accuse Catholics” on things, we need to be more Christian like, and try to understand “how and why” they believe the way they do. This does not mean we have to Agree with them, but if we understand what they believe and why, then we can wittness back to them with Christian Love.
The Lady and I became good friends…then she moved…so our Bible Study Stopped after 6 years. But I wish I would have known then what I know now…so I could have Shown her in the Bible, why Catholics believe what we do.
When I grew up as a Catholic our CC program never taught us why or where to find it in the Bible…Years later now with the internet and Catholic Books easy to get…I now know Why and Where to find it, to show others Why we believe what we do and Why we do what we do.
Do i think they are Christians…without a doubt I do…they just don’t have all the correct information.
Let us not judge them and say they are not Christians…let us be as prepared as they are…so that we can Wittness Back to them.
Don’t be like others who condem the Catholics, (because they really don’t know what we believe, they only know what they read on the internet or in books about Catholics)
If you truely want to Wittness to someone, you also have to be willing to Listen, to what they have to say, otherwise how can you start on a common ground?
By the way when this lady is back in the area to Visit…she always stops by and we have coffee and chat…yes they can have friends who are not JW’s. But it is true that they have a close knitt of friends who mostly are JW’s. That is because they are very Active in their Kingdom Hall and such.
