Not sure… We have scapulars of various materials. All the scapulars that have entered our home have been blessed by a priest… I would thank if they were not approved, the priest would not bless them… Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe he would? :ehh:

Blessing,

Will B.

I prefer the traditional, wool scapulars, but the most recent official, joint statement by the Discalced and Ancient Observance Carmelites on the Brown Scapular makes no mention of a requirement that they be made out of wool.

God bless,

Yes, I agree. Your link is from the Rite of Blessing of and Enrolment in the Scapular that was “issued and confirmed by the Congregation for Divine Worship and for the Discipline of the Sacraments Nov. 29, 1996. Prot. 2243/96/L”

of course with the exception of the scapular medal.
There have been no reported miracles with any Scapulars except for those that are made of pure wool - if that adds anything to your decision. 🤷

And apparently none to the medal, either. Altho’ the “dispensation” to wear a medal instead of a scapular could be granted in specific circumstances, excluding fashion/comfort/vanity (according to my little folder that came with my brown scapular).

Also, properly, one does not “get a scapular blessed”, one is “invested with the scapular”, and I believe there is a particular ritual/prayer associated with this.

Yes, exactly. The investiture only happens once, though, even if you get a new scapular. I don’t know whether you would get your second scapular blessed with a normal blessing, though - would you? 🤷

A second scapular does not need to be blessed. The blessing is on the person, not the sacramental. Get a new scapular, and dispose of the old one in a pious and solemn manner (burning or burying). The blessing “transfers” to the new scapular.

I wear the wool one. There seem to be an awful lot of plastic covered ones now. Personally I try to steer clear of 'em… Yes the wool can be itchy…tends to remind me of little Francesco from Fatima though.

I’d read that the connotation of the woolen brown scapular is that when you kiss it (a blessed one of course), you’re kissing the Lamb of God…hence the significance of the wool.

I’ve read several web-sites that post conflicting information regarding the Brown Scapular,…several reported the substitution of the medal for the scapular was rarely acceptable, and never in the case of “vanity”, while others reported a person could wear either.

I was invested with mine by an FSSP priest at the communion rail immediately after Mass one Sunday, the investiture was all in Latin and it was beautiful!

If you want a really really nice one,…I would suggest a visit here:

sistersofcarmel.com/scapulars.php

I emailed the Sisters and asked if they would make three of them for me, without a picture or fancy embroidery on them. They made me three very soft wool scapulars with a hand sewn edge, the size and length I requested. They are very comfortable and I treasure them. (By the way, they also make the most beautiful and well made Rosaries I’ve ever seen!)
